Ive recently moved yards but yard im at has a lot of rules and Im not sure I will like it there. So am looking elsewhere.

Just wondering how many of you are at yards like that. Have found a yard run by a friend so may check that out.

Yards need rules ro run properly, a lot of rules are just plain common sense - like no smoking in hay barn! but if it's in writing no one can say they didn't know about them.

I know of one yard near me where the rules are too OTT one of them being - Bring your own toilet paper!!

The thing about rules are they are only ever brought in because someone has done something to cause them.
We had to make a rule no-one tied to the huge stable block doors after one idiot tied her horse to the door handle of a sliding 12 foot high heavy door!
You need clear ruling re who is expected to sweep up, times you can buy hay etc and turnout, otherwise the poor Yard Owner has no life at all.
If you object to rules there is one way to avoid them. do as the Yard owner has done and buy your own property , then you can do exactly as you like without interference!
I reckon I can safely speak for all yard owners if I say we wish we could have no rules, sadly people doing daft things or abusing facilities make most people state their requirements.

My yard didn't have any rules until this weekend, at first was great, but quickly nothing was ever sorted, people started advantage, and noone knew where they stood. Now there are new rules, but nothing very helpful!

Henryhorn - very well said.

The things people do are incredibly stupid at times. We introduced the 'if you bring your children up the yard they must be supervised' after this woman used to bring all her toddlers up and then let them run wild, finding one of them kicking poor diesel and another one playing in the pond while mummy rode her horse wasn't on.

Also no trying your horse to the flagpole, don't feed your horse tied up on the yard - especially if it kicks... Rules evole as the things people do get more and more stupid

My livery yard I have a few rules but nothing too bad. Just things like no smoking, tying up to your stable your horse on the twine, sweeping up after yourself and keeping the yard clean and tidy. Dont think thats bad. I have at the mo 4 liveries and no complaints soo far haha:)

I actually issue all new liveries with our set of rules - 3 sides of A4 - think size 12 font!!!

no-one has ever complained about them, except the one that they should wear a riding hat when riding!
our rules may seem long, but they are all common sense - lights turned off after use etc etc but if everyone is given a copy at the start - there are no excuses that they never knew!

yes some rules are broken - people dont always sweep up after themselves but we are easy going and flexible - yes sometimes people are running late for work and dont have time so thats fine.

yards need rules and need them written down in my opinion - and yes - as time goes on they get longer and longer due to liveries doing things which result in problems like someone said before about the barn door!
