Do you think that you should get a discount if you have multiple horses at livery?

Maybe small one for the reduction in admin, time in dealing with one person instead of several and collecting money from one person

Beyond that no as your overheads as a YO aren't reduced

No as costs aren't reduced, however it's a nice touch if this is offered.

Wagtail - interesting as £90 is a big reduction. What is this based on?

I don't know. I will probably regret it! It's okay in the summer but in the winter, my profit on the additional horse will be down to around £80 a month. That's for full livery.

I think there is something to be said for already knowing the client - perhaps worth giving an incentive to an existing client's second horse than taking on an unknown?

But that would be very personal to the dynamics of the yard, I guess.

I pay £110 for one horse DIY and then £75 for each horse after that x Not sure why its cheaper, but guess the YO likes having less people and more horses!! x

Gosh I wish I did as have currently 12 horses in 3 different parts of the same yard as in stallion on full livery, 3 mares and 5 young on the second part and 3 on the DIY yard no discounts offered. Did speak to owner of the yard and she pointed out why should I offer discounts when we can fill the boxes at full price. I will add to this in my view the yard prices are very reasonable for the area. But I did ask as they say don't ask don't get.

When I had 2 horses on full livery I got just over 10% off normal livery price for both of them.

It's quite normal in a lot of other businesses to offer discount for multiple buys so I asked for discount and got it :)

My yard doesn't offer a discount for more than one horse, I'd love to be on your yard Wagtail! I have two and as far as I'm aware I pay the same as anyone else with one. Although a discount would be nice there aren't any reduced costs with the second horse and my yard is so popular that even if I didn't have the second horse the stable would be filled so I guess there's no need to discount the livery on it.

Also have to say my yard is reasonably priced and care is second to none so I'd rather have that than cheaper livery.

I read the other day about someone paying to have their colicing horse walked for them, my yard would never do this. My yo stayed with me all night when my lad was taken in to horsepital, drove him there etc and didn't ask me for a penny extra. I did give her fuel money and something for her time though as wouldn't have felt right otherwise, but in these situations, I'd rather pay the money and have the best care.

My old yard gave discounts for second livery. Though thats prob because no one wanted stables there or they left very quickly as they are overbearing, interfering and turn on you the moment you do something for yourself that you want to do or dont listen to them. Rant over :D

Only if its cheaper for the yard to have more horses belonging to one person rather than separately owned. Eg perhaps on all inclusive full livery with two horses on identical routines it maybe slightly cheaper in terms of work required. Whereas basic cheap diy on a farm its going to cost the yard the same.

But would it be in YO's best interests to encourage more multi-horse owners? If they left the yard it would be a greater percentage of Yard income lost than if an owner with one horse left.

Having said that I appreciate a discount for having my two at the yard :D

I've always kept two together, and I've never been offered reductions for multiple horse owners.

I suppose it depends on the circumstances, if the livery is a private yard at a person’s house, then I would assume they'd be more likely to prefer to have less people hanging about, so multiple horse owners would be more desirable to them and maybe discounts would be offered.
If the livery is at a medium/largish sized yard, running as a professional business, then I guess there isn't likely to be any advantage/disadvantage to having multiple/single horse owners, and as long as the stables are full and the horses are all fee paying, then that is probably the most important thing.

I know a few places round us that do discounts for more than one horse, because they would rather have fewer people, and have found that people who have two have less time on their hands to be bitchy! They also say that oneperson with two horses has lower storage requirements than 2 people with 2 horses, and it is just easier.
I've come across a few racehorse trainers who do multi horse discounts.

This would be amazing but would never in a million years happen on my yard :D !!! Our livery has just recently increased :( A discount would probably also make me more likely to accumulate more horses haha, so probably a good thing this is not offered to us ....

I have four on DIY livery, but no discount.

Last yard discounted if one person had more than two horses, so D1 and I had two at full and two at reduced. The YO worked on the basis that you couldn't ride two horses at once, so shouldn't pay full for two :D

Surely a discount (even a small one) is a marketing tool? The yard I'm on, I went to see it and spoke to YO, and she mentioned the price and because I have 2 I'd get a £10 discount for my 2nd one. This was unexpected and much appreciated. Because the price is lower than expected I decided I could afford a stable, so there's £20 per month and I've just added a field shelter to my livery so another £20 per month. I also do most of the competitions on the yard.

Not really as you are still using all the electric, water etc for second horse. So you would not be making a profit.
When we use floodlights, this is PAYG. When its dark for mucking their field out etc, I'll be using my headtorch, so no electric used for my firts horse, never mind for my second horse.
Water - still used for 2nd horse.

I'm DIY and horses live out. Hiring the XC course/having stable/shelter/hiring Show Jump course on occasion and entering competitions, I spend far more than the discount I get but its a nice gesture.

There are at least 6 of us on yard with a second horses and about 8 with single horses.

I negotiated a tiny one o £10 a month, more rounding down to the nice round number for two. There will be equally high overheads really in terms of forage bed and work to look after them, just a little saving in terms of space in tack and rug areas but from their point of view, it was another full livery and I am reliable and pay on time as opposed to a unknown quantity and diy.

I do know some ym though that prefer multiple horse owners as you have less different people to deal with.

On the yard I am on nearly everyone has more than one horse except me!. There is no discount for multiple horses though I think you might be able to get one if your horses live out and share one stable between them. However the yard is nearly always full so YO has no reason to give a discount.

Where it might work is if you have a current livery contemplating getting a 2nd horse and the yard has vacancies so a discount might encourage someone to get a 2nd horse and then fill a vacancy.
