Following on from Arwens thread about discounts for multiple horses I wondered if those of you with ponies paid less than for a horse.

Someone asked me today whether they could board two small ponies for the cost of one horse, stabled at night, and as this is what could be called full livery as I do everything. I said that they could have a discount for sharing one stall and $20 for less hay, but that two ponies, regardless of size still meant I had two to care for muck out etc. The (potential) owner then said that "Oh No, they must have a stall each" so I told her, no discount for stalls then, I charge for the rent of the stall, not the size of horse that goes in it. Hopefully she'll decide to keep them in her back yard (she has 2 acres) Shitties! More trouble than they are worth.

Just wondered what other yards do.

Yep - when I had to go into DIY livery....got a small discount as small pony went into a small purpose built stable-let! (it was only about 8'x8' and lying down was a bit of an interesting one, but needs must at the time...) I would expect to pay per stall although if ponies were out, I have given discounts for smaller mouths to feed.

For your situation, I would charge for the stall and maybe knock a couple of $ off the grazing per animal (2 smallies are NOT = to one big one tho!).

Good luck...this is why I have vowed never to do liveries ever again!

Our yard doesn't do discounts for ponies, despite them eating less haylage. All the stables are the same size.
There is a cob and a shetland who share a stable, and they only pay for one stable, but I really don't think the shetland eats much

Yes I have but only when the pony shared a very large stable with my other horse but it was on DIY so hay etc was not included in the discount, I paid for what I used.

I have the ponies in smaller stables so they are less than the horses - if a pony is in a horse stable though they pay the same !

They do get a discount of hay and shavings as they seem to only need a bale a week instead of the horses who need to !!

`NO my YO works on the basis that you pay for the box and faclities whatever. We have fab facilities and people that dont even ride??!! (we have indoor school XC and SJ in fields horse walker etc etc)

I had a shetland once as a companion at my old yard and i paid half but he did have a tiny stable

nope, pay the same but now my 2 are moving into a 20 x 20 stable together i am paying for 1 1/2 horses i think.

We get a slight discount, but do have a slightly smaller stable and he does eat less than a big horse. At least he gets given less - he would probably eat as much as the big boys given half a chance! It's not half though and nor should it be. It isn't half as far to the field to turn him out and it's still one haynet to fill and carry across the yard even if it may take a few seconds less to fill.

The only person on our yard that has a discount is the shetland and thats because her stable is tiny and anything over 12hh wouldn't fit comfortably. Even the people in the three pony stables pay the same as those in the 18x18 large horse stables.

I would not give them two for one if they needed two stalls. NO WAY! You could get another horse in there at full rpice, so WHY would you allow her that? If she has two acres I have no idea why she just does not keep them at home. Unless she just simply does not want to care for them in the winter?
Having owned small ponies I can tell you that they Crap just as much as the next...still the same amount of work ...still another bucket to chip ice off of in the winter ...or an even larger electric bill for plugging in one extra heated bucket!
Not to mention one extra stall to clean!

NO WAY!
