Desperately looking for somewhere cheaper to keep my two horses. Currently paying £38/Wk including hay but my elderly horse cannot really eat much hay and now my younger horse has managed to break two molars and is going to have them removed next week. I doubt she will be able to eat much hay anymore either! My problem is that the yard will not reduce the price even though I'm not able to use the hay at all so I'm going to have to move. There is no way I can afford their livery plus hay replacer for two big horses!! I don't care about fancy facilities (although an arena would be nice!) Just somewhere with plenty of grazing, stabling (pens in a shed would do) and access to some hacking. Ideally me bonnyrigg/dalkieth/penicuik sort of areas but would consider further. Any suggestions?

Well I used to share a horse at Morton Mains so I could possibly tell you. They have a field with jumps that you can ride in and an outdoor school and lovely places to hack (if it's not wet!). Only thing is, the fields are rather over grazed and the horses don't actually tend to have that much grass. The owner who's horse I used to share, had a thing where they sectioned off the field and rotated it so that the horses had grass, but as far as I was aware that was the only field that actually did it. Also, the jumps usually need replaced quite a lot and the liveries are supposed to pay for it, I think. You are unable to book the school unless you are getting a lesson with an instructor, otherwise you could be riding with 5 or more people in the school at once. And the grass school and places to hack (when wet) are very slippery and really quite sinky as well for the horse. I much preferred being at Swanston where I used to have a share that I unfortunately had to give up, but that is probably because I always had people to ride with and the horse I shared was so lovely, and the majority of people talked to me. Whereas when I gave him up, I rushed into sharing a mare at Morton Mains and she wasn't my type of horse at all, she was older and was basically a school master and when I was there, I didn't actually know a lot of the people so the majority of the time I was riding by myself. That's just my experience with Morton Mains and what I know so yeah. You could try Tower, but someone I used to know kept their horse there, and they turned up one day to find some helper from Tower had been told they could ride it, even though the horses was a livery and not involved with the riding school at all. I would also recommend not going to Midkinleith. I know so many people who have had such bad experiences with there. There's also a stable in Colinton and one in Gorebridge if you wanted to try there :). Don't know how good they are though. Anyway good luck if you haven't found anywhere!

Thanks for that. I've found somewhere ideal. I didn't even look at Morton mains as I figured out it would add 80 miles a week to my travel which would kill any livery saving! Fuel prices are the bain of my life!!

What about Coates Farm? Just outside Penicuik? It is pretty cheap with haylege in the field, there are far less horses there at the moment but they don't have a school, hacking is really good though.
