Something ive thought about lately my horse is on diy livery anyway i was thinking of trying to rent or buy a field errect a portable shelter and get another horse .It would be easier for me for horses to live out ,he has done all his life <they have to come in every night in winter> there is no assistance on yard unless you do favour for a favour , the yards fine just something i really fancey doing have anyof you swapped and prefered either way ?I would have someone to check on them if i was away on holiday

I wouldnt want to do it, as I'd be worried about the lack of around the clock supervision. It would be an option for us if we wanted it to be, but the worry of not having someone on site 24hrs keeps me at livery! (that and the fact that our livery yard is so lovely :D)

I know what you mean , my current place has no one living on site .
The last place aman came to pick up a horse hed bought from yard -took a similar one loaded it up and drove off ! NO one stopped him and he passed the house twice and in full view !
I would look to making it secure as possible and try and choose one near were if possible they can be kept an eye on .

It's tricky, isnt it? I guess if you put up some decent fencing (closeboard would be ideal but pretty expensive if you're talking acres!) and perhaps invest in some CCTV, then it wouldnt be so bad. At the end of the day, you cant make anything 100% safe....for me it's more things like late night checks that I would worry about. I take comfort in knowing that my YO would be able to hear a horse in distress from his house, and that he goes down last thing at night to check them all. It would worry me not to do that!

I moved from a very small livery yard to a yard on my own in March. I love having the yard to myself and doing what I want. We don't go on holiday but if we go away for a night/weekend I have someone that can check on them. I go twice a day and the horses are turned out 24/7. It is good that I can split the field up as I want and have been strip grazing it.
I would definitely recommend having a place to yourself.

Thank-you , i know i can make it work if i get the right place, and do it right ,fencing and security best i can,at the end of the day if someone wants it they will take it regardless i will start to look itll probably take a year to find the right place !
