Apologies if this has been done before.

Trying to gage opinions on supply of hay and bedding when on DIY livery.

Basic DIY, liveries supply their own from their own suppliers / purchase from YO.

DIY with hay and bedding inclusive, then how much on top of your basic livery would you expect to pay, and how much do you expect YO to supply, 'ad lib', or a set amount, extra incurring more cost.

Understand different regional costs, but all opinions would be very welcome. Thanks

Mine changes monthly as it depends how much I use but generally for my stallion on DIY it is

£130 for livery
£40 for 1 large bale of hay
£6.40 per bale of miscanthus bedding (I usually go through 4/5 a month)

So my livery bill is usually between £195.60 and £202

I have to buy bedding and hay from my YO though so I cant shop around...

I've always been charged separately for bedding, so a set price per bale of shavings. Anything from £6.50 per bale to £7.50 - it depended on what the YO was paying for it. Just used to mark it up in the book as to how many bales were required each week and then the total was added to the livery bill.

With hay, I was once on a yard where you bought it from the YO in small square bales, again price was per bale and added on to the overall bill. Another yard offered a set amount of hay per day included in the price - about 10kg per day in total spread over three nets (you could of course buy extra if required, but I didn't need to). This method worked well too, and tbh they were about the same cost wise.

I've also been on yards where ad-lib hay was included, and honestly it depends whether the YO charges enough to realistically cover their costs. All horses and ponies are not the same, and what is ad-lib for one could be too much or too little for another. Fine if YO realises this, not so good if they don't!

I pay £90/m for livery- day turnout in winter, 24/7 turnout in Summer- ad-lib grazing.

In the winter, I pay just shy of £20/m for bedding, and about £9/m for hay (I get large bales, so one lasts me 2 months give or take (small horse)).

I buy my hay and bedding separately, as YO doesn't supply any (he buys in too).

Ax

£55 a month for stable and own field. £2 for bale of straw and £4 for bale of hay.

So pay £55 in summer and just over £100 in the winter

I but hay and straw through my YM - she organises delivery & we just pay her for her to pass the money on.

Straw is £12 & hay £24.

In the summer I use about half a bale of straw a month. In the winter I'd use 1- 1 and a half bales.

In the summer, one bale of hay will last me about 2-3 months. In the winter, it's more like three quarters to a whole bale a month.
