Hi all

I have been riding for many years but haven't yet got to own a horse. I am planning to start looking within the month. Anyone wanna share their knowledge on a couple things?

I'll be looking for assisted / part / full livery in South Cambridgeshire (the closer to Cambridge the better), depending on options. I need turnout and an arena, and the package has to include turning out and bringing in, and giving feeds. Anyone can give pointers to good yards in the area and average monthly cost? Ideally no more than 25 minute drive from Cambridge?

Also, how to go about the purchase? Does the seller hold the horse with a deposit until livery is found, or is it best to secure livery first? How long in advance should I start calling yards?

Thank you so much and looking forward to hear from yall :)

Finding livery can take quite a while, and depending on why someone is selling, they may not be able to hold a horse for you for that long. Some dealers might want you to buy the horse in full and charge you livery. Generally, a deposit will hold until vetting and then you have to make a decision (especially recently when nice horses have been selling very quickly!). If you were dealing with a private seller, you might also end up in an awkward situation if the horse was injured or became ill whilst you were looking for livery.

So I'd suggest finding livery first, you'll likely have to put a deposit down to secure a box and possibly pay some or all of the bills- but at least once you find your horse, you can bring it straight home!

Finding livery in Cambs is a bit of a nightmare.

The closest yard to Cambridge is Haggis Farm which is in Barton. Good facilities and nice owners. Full liv from what I can remember is about £550 a month.

Avoid South Cambs Eq centre - know a few people who have been there who were very unhappy.

Feel free to PM me, I know most yards in the area quite well and know of a yard I could probably get you into.

I had a horse at haggis farm as a teenager!! Many moons ago, I'm not even sure it is the same family that run it now or not as I've not lived in the area for a very long time. Hacking was only ever round the farm due to the M11 being so close and turnout was limited in winter to protect the fields but that could all have changed. We paid £200 a month for full livery ? shows how times have changed!! Was great for kids as it was a riding school back then x
