Hi all,
New here (very new, moving from the US) and looking for a livery yard near Woking, where I’ll be working. Preferably not too fancy but still want to compete occasionally. I think looking for full/part livery? Not exactly sure on the terms, it seems like part livery is eq. to US full board, so care but no grooming/training, and full livery adds those things in? Most of the time I’ll be able to ride/groom myself but if there’s a way to have that for when I’m on work trips that would be great. Covered ring/good turnout/trainer on site would be a plus, but don’t know how reasonable that is. The covered ring would be a big help to not worry about weather when riding after work…
And if anyone has recommendations for places for a recent graduate to live around that area (as usual I’m dealing with horse first me later) that would also be super helpful!

Thanks!

Are you going to be based right in the town?
Horse: You'll be best looking in the Chobham area, 3 to 5 miles out of Woking (depending on which side of Chobham).
There are very few yards close to Woking and nothing that I can think of that offers what you are looking for, though try messaging Bourne Meadows on the edge of Horsell common (2 miles from centre of Woking) as they do 5 day full (no riding but horsewalker if wanted) and can offer services at weekend. Daytime turnout, direct hacking with no roadwork.
In Chobham there are quite a number of yards through not all have access to decent hacking, the better ones have all you need.
Try Redwood Equestrian (about 4.5 miles from Woking centre), also Larkenshaw Farm in Chobham and Stanley Grange Stables in Pirbright. (About 8 miles)
Covered arena's are pretty rare in the area, I can think of only 1 livery yard near to town that has one. The likes of Parwood Equestrian centre has one, about 10 miles out and is a very decent yard that has comps on site all year round Merrist Wood also has decent indoor but is a training and comp centre only, no liveries.
All the above will mean you needing your own transport, as public transport rubbish.

I'm happy to advise where bargepoles need to be used by PM.

Your accom? Depending on where horse can go really. My yard is 3.5 miles from home the other side of town, most v early mornings it takes me about 7 minutes to commute there, but in rush hour or bad weather it takes anything from 20 mins (usual) to up to an hour! I keep odd hours..... works better lol x

Stupid American here, just moved over with my horse last month. The terminology may differ slightly between yards, just have them clarify. In the yards I looked at around Suffolk/Norfolk, part livery (partial DIY or assisted DIY) was not full board, but rather full board during the week and you do your stalls/feeding/ turnout on your on on the weekend (or other designated days). Full livery was full board equivalent in the US (stall cleaned, all feeding/turnout/rug changes/hold for vet/farrier etc).

Yards will often have a mix of DIY, partial DIY/part livery, and full livery clients. That varies from a lot of competition barns in the States that are more likely to require all clients to be on full board (and more recently, part or full training on top....$$$). So don't be confused to see different types of liveries on one yard.

Again, clarify with the yard, but that's what I've found. Also, I was never at a "full service" barn in the US where all grooming/tacking/untacking is also added in for additional cost. I was on full board but never in full service as I did the riding and everything that entails myself.

Welcome! If you have any other US to UK questions don't hesitate to PM me! ?
