Hi

I was told by a livery yesterday that he hsd decidedd to sell his horse - and has sold him today.

His intention ias to get another one and I have said that if they want to keep the stable a retainer is required, if they don't want to pay the retainer then the notice period (in a contract ) is required and they will have to chance it whether I have a box spare when they found another horse.

Does that seem fair and reasonable?
 
Your nice! Most yards expect you to pay full whack even if the horse isn't there (DIY anyway). The YM still has to pay their bills and it's their choice not to have a horse, unfair for YO to loose out. They are running a business.

I haven't had a horse at my yard for 2 months and have paid full price without even thinking.
 
Seems fair to me as long as the stable is left open for the length of the notice, if the owner of the horse has paid for a months rent on it, and gets another horse during that month it should be there for him.
 
Seems more than fair to me, when my young horse was sent away to be broken I still had to pay the full rent for the 3 months she wasn't there.
 
Now see, while it does sound fair and I understand business is business but I personally wouldn't have the heart to charge someone top whack for something they're not using; a retainer yes but top whack is plain greedy.
 
I think charge him the retainer fee or if he doesnt want to do that then a months notice if it is in the contract.

I know some yards require a months notice before the retainer fee comes into play.
 
Totally agree with having to pay a retainer. Where I am DIY is £45 (stable and grazing and ad hib haylage) but a retainer is £25. Pretty fair really but would understand if the whole amount was expected.

However, I would begrudge paying for part or full livery if I didnt have a new horse straightaway, although being 'devil's advocate' could understand if full payment was due if they could have fill the stable with a new livery.
 
at the end of the month notice period you should charge the full wack for stable rent, as peeps above have said, you're running a business not a charity.
