I have a small DIY yard, which is £150 pcm for stable and grazing. New livery (horse) is coming with a mini shetland, and I wasn't sure what is reasonable to charge for it. 2 options, it either goes in the stable with the horse or has its own. It won't really be taking a stable away from a horse as I have too many stables and not enough grass, so wouldn't be filling it anyway. They will be sharing a field.
What do people charge for this? either for the shared stable or its own stable.
TIA

If it gets its own stable then the same as a full grown horse (unless you include forage and bedding, in which case a small reduction possibly). If it shares a stable maybe half price?

Just depends on how much mayhem it causes in other aspects!

Our other livery has a Shetland as company to her 15.2. We also have spare stables and less grazing. The yard owner agreed that as long as they were in same field together and it was her grazing she would have to monitor, then he only charged half the diy amount. The reason being was that it was extra money in his pocket as although the stable could be rented to another, there would not have been a spare field

I had this same scenario a few years ago but the person wanted the Shetland to have their own stable but only thought she should pay half the livery . I took the view that it was the same price regardless as I could have had a full price one in the stable . The person took exception to this and started yelling at me and stormed off thank goodness . Another reason I have given up livery 😁

If sharing a stable with the other horse then I would give up to a 50% reduction. If having it's own stable then full price.

But I think the OP said the Shetland would not have its own field. But to share. And she has spare stables. Which is what happened at our yard. So, the Shetland went half price as otherwise the livery may as well rent two fields, and then have more grazing. If extra grazing was avail

We have a shetland at the yard my horse is kept at. Everyone is on full livery but the shetland gets a 50% reduction because it eats less forage and it's in a small storage area that's been converted into a stable. If it had a full size stable, the price would go up.
Worth finding out if it's a well behaved shetland before you agree the price - broken fences can get expensive!!

if i understand it correctly, your stables are let eith individual fields. You havent any more fields, so couldnt let this stable, so renting it is a bonus and the shetland wouldnt be getting the same deal as other liveries (ie, own field)? If so I'd perhaps charge £75/100 instead of £150. If sharing the stable and field zid be inclined to charge very little, if anything. My liveries have two little goats here for free.

The yard I’m on gives a discount for smaller ponies (under 13hh at a guess). They get their own stable but only a half size field. I can’t remember how much the discount is, probably around £20-£30 per month.
I’d echo Honey08. You couldn’t rent this spare stable to a horse as you don’t have any more grass. So the income you get from the Shetland is a bonus. It would be nice to offer some discount. If it turns out to be a fence wrecker then make it clear early on that breakages must be paid for.

The only time I had a Shetland on the yard, he caused far more hassle than several standard sized horses combined, so I'd be charging treble :p

Seriously though, whatever you decide to charge, I would be clear that it's reviewable in case you find it's more trouble than it's worth.

If your the one responsible for making sure it doesn't get out, a reasonable amount :p
If owner bringing own appropriate fencing not so much.

It should be quadruple the standard rates for goats!!

Yes Im coming to that conclusion! Ive had the owners put them in a huge pen we had for the hens, as they were always on the yard, pooping everywhere and snapping the elec fence or letting ponies out with their horns (itching on bottom bolt). IDont think the liveries sre that impressed, they are adorable pets to them, but I prefer them safely away from thr yard. They're lovely gosts, but i didnt want them under my feet 24/7. Hope thats not mean!

My old yard charged half rate for little ponies but they had a few old wooden boxes which were tiny and had no lights.
If I took a horse and Shetland and they shared a stable and field I’d expect half price but I’d also expect to be responsible for making sure it was well contained in the field!!

Do you need to make any alterations to the stable (ie lower height of door) or the field (ie extra rail/'leccy line of fencing) to accomodate a mini? If so are the costs offset by less forage or use of spare stable?

My mini shetland shares the stable and I pay £10 extra a week. That is for the stable only - I supply my own bedding and hay.

I rent a field, with field shelter and stables from a farmer. He charges per horse/pony depending on size , so Shetland, pony up to 14.2hh, horse up to 16hh and over 16hh
