Sorry, another one of my boring where can I put my horses threads!

After we were gazumped on the Newmarket house  and now OH's exam is nearly done with we have decided upon Bury St Edmunds as the place to go and live.

I know it's horsey out there but does anyone know of any specific yards? I work in Babraham so south west would be ideal as would then be on the way to work but beggars can't be choosers.

Thanks in advance :)

Boyton Hall is fantastic, it's 20mins by car directly south of B.S.E - so not sure if you want anywhere closer? But it is a fantastic yard, well worth checking out. Gorgeous schools (2 massive outdoors, small indoor all with good surfaces), miles of off road hacking, show jumps, they do all sorts of competitions, long distance rides, instructors over for lessons. There's also a feed store/tack shop on site. Run by the nicest, friendliest people imaginable :)

Horringer hall, and little horringer hall have some great hacking. Theres a yard just through Ickworth park too. Not sure what they're like for livery as I don't know anyone there, but they have fantastic hacking!

Barrow Hall Stables is a livery and Riding School. Probably the most well known around Suffolk, good hacking, an indoor, outdoor and covered school. It's west of Bury so probably the right area for you?

Trish Adams in lawshall did livery, I think she still does. Her number will come up online if you search with the pony club. She's highly recommended if she still does livery, and again lawshall is the right direction for you.

CWG and Bury feeds have notice boards up which advertise some of the smaller livery yards in the villages. South West of B.S.E I'm sure there are loads of smaller places in the villages, I only really hear about the main, big ones!

Hope that helps :) Feel free to PM if you want any specific info about any of them, or anywhere else you hear of :)

Thanks Trolt, didn't think of going to look in CWG. dur!

Will have a look round online at the places you have mentioned :)

Frankly, I'd be happy to chuck them both out in a field! (although not if BH needs prolonged box rest the toad!)

ETS: Boyton hall looks fab but a bit far for me really as I have to commute to work as well :(

Did wonder if Boyton was too South for you, shame because it's a gorgeous yard (I get yard envy every time I watch a friend at a comp/lesson there!)

I'm sure there are loads of smaller yards out in the villages.

Long Melford tack shop might advertise some of them in that area too, not sure if they have a notice board as haven't been in there for years.

There's also Dawns tackbox in B.S.E which has a noticeboard, so might have some advertised.

thanks caramac. It is :( Which is a shame.

I think I'll have a trawl of the tack shops, they're usually the best places to go aren't they? Plus I get to do some shopping :D Can anyone tell me roughly where Dawn's is and Bury Feeds?

Hey cutecob :)

I'm after DIY really. Partly because I don't want to pay for something I can do myself, and partly because I wouldn't want to inflict my horrible beasts on anyone else! I don't have much on my lists of requirements. All year turnout is number one, after that I am willing to compromise quite a lot. I certainly don't require a walker and a solarium and hot running water or anything posh like that! I wouldn't know what to do with it :D

Will go to Dawn's and CWG next Saturday I think. You aren't a scientist too are you?

What about Rede/chedburgh/haverhill/ousdenway? Quite a few yards there (or used to be when I was based near Bse!)

Fizz- someone has told me about a yard in Depden. I'm waiting for them to come back to me with contact details. Ideally I'd rather be a bit closer in/closer to the A14 ( OH works in Norwich so ideally don't want to live too far south of town) but as it's easier to rehome us than the horses I'm open to all suggestions at the moment :) It's certainly pretty countryside out that way and would make a welcome change from the awful hacking /ugly fens I have to put up with now :)

Bury Feeds?

It's on Thetford Road, as you come out Bury towards the Fornhams/Culford.

Go along Fornham Road. Turn right at the traffic lights. The Tollgate pub is on your right, Priory Hotel is behind a wall on your left.
Go over the river, field of horses on your right and "Tollgate Tyres and Exhausts" on the left. you need to turn into "Tollgate Tyres" and then drive down the right hand side of the building to head around the back. Bury Feeds is there :)
If you reach the BMW garage then you've gone too far ;)

Actually, as a thought. There are fields with horses on right hand side, and just beyond the BMW garage are another set of fields on the left. Both of these places have all year turn out. I know nothing about them, and I know they're privately rented ...but may be worth enquiring if you got really stuck?

Elms Farm has lovely big outdoor school and I think has year round turn out, its just off haverhill rd just south of Depden turning on opposite side of road, hacking a bit better that side. There's also a very nice friendly DIY yard and Thurlow but probably a bit far for you. I have a friend with a yard between Ousden and Ashley that has year round turnout on well managed fields, PM me if you need details. I live near there so happy to help with local advice.

All year turnout can be tricky to find in this area. I'd definitely have a look at Elms farm as suggested earlier. There is also a place in Rede that does DIY.
Lower farm in Saxham used to do DIY, but I'm not sure if they do any more. Barrow Hall stables only do full or working livery.
There are a couple of yards on the road between Kentford and Red Lodge, I have no idea of contact details but it may be worth taking a drive over there.
You could also try near to work - there are several yards on the Abington land settlement, which is just over the A11 from Babraham.
Yes, I am also a scientist (for my sins!), I did my PhD at Babraham more years ago than I'd care to admit to and now work at Sanger.

You had to be really. There isn't any other reason to be driving to that area for work, nothing else there! :p :D

I'm not actually at the institute, we just rent space from them but it's a nice place to work. Very pretty :)
