Livery scenario - what would you do?

Hi guys, just after your thoughts on the following:

Yard A - yard owner is lovely & very knowlegeable. new yard gets bigger (more stables built) and through winter becomes apparent that the land does not stand up to wintering well with the amount of horses (horses get reduced t/o which is not good for my pone as he gets really ansty when stabled). School is not really big enough and is not in good condition at all. hacking is great, but you really need to school as pony is still young and needs bringing on. stable is big, hay is usually good quality. Bringing in only done Mon-Fri....its also a good half hour journey each way (which is difficult given working hours)........
Generally the yard is not 'easy' to work around. Nice liveries (but a bit cliquey and atmosphere is not always 'comfortable'...)

Yard B - fantastic large flood lit school, 2 mins from work, right next to country park for hacking, large cushion ride school, wash box, really knowledgable YO who is a BHSI. Full livery during the week, part livery at weekend (but this is still t/o's, muck outs etc you just have to bring horse in in evening!!). livery includes bedding, hay, tack cleaning, grooming plus all other usuals, mucking out etc just not riding. No idea really about other liveries, but the place has a good reputation.

Sounds clear cut!! But Yard B is £35 a week more than Yard A. It is affordable and will still leave money left at the end of the month after covering all outgoings, but it will obviously leave a lot less to play with each month.....which makes me nervous!! I don't necessarily 'need' that much livery, but current arrangement is a bit too less given working hours and travelling distance....

What would you do?!?!?! (ps. all other yard options in the area have been exhausted as either all DIY or keep in for prolonged periods in the winter!!!)

Have fun

...beans on toast really are quite nice - vary by having a little lemon juice or black pepper, or spoil yourself and have both

.

Hope it goes well hun.

That is true marragic - at a rough guess I'd save around £40 a month on petrol, so the actual difference in livery costs a month would be about £100 which still leaves less to play with - I guess I'm just looking for reassurance - I can afford it and still have money left - I'm just a bit nervous as a. I've never spent that much a month on livery before! and b. I've recently got very over-cautious about money and £100 less a month to play seems an awful lot!
(I recently lost £200 on a deposit on a car as I got terrified of the finance and backed out of the deal!!!)....

tbh i wouldnt have to question my thoughts

,if you look deep enough i think you will find you already know what you want to do

People can advise but you need to do what is right for you and po at this moment in time!If you leave yard you are on atm on good terms there should be no reason why you couldnt return if this other yard dosnt work out?

As I've got older, I've got very in-decisive and worry inscesantly (sp!)

- I really wanted to hear what other people would do I guess...I know I have to make the decision myself, but it can sometimes help to hear what others would do in the same situation, especially if your crap like me and have trouble even deciding which knickers to put on every morning!!

I hope things work out for you, personally i would go for the 2nd option, especially if i had a young horse over again, the early yrs are the most influencial, and if you can work him properly it will make a massive difference

Yard B
Cliquey livery yards can be so miserable - if time with the pony is "down time" you need a place that serves the practical purpose and can still be the haven you need after a hard days work x

Is there definitely nothing inbetween? Like a good DIY yard on the way to work somewhere along your route. That way not extra petrol as technically your off to work anyway, has good facilities but is alot cheaper?

If not than B without a doubt. But do they only do full?? As it is so close to your work, do they not do DIY or even something where you can do a few more of the chores to bring cost down?

x

TBH if B includes all hay and bedding then that knocks another £20 a week off the bill roughly, especially if you paying more for bedding atm as horse has to be in more, so tbh between that and the petrol you'll more or less be paying the same IYSWIM so I would go for yard B-oh and it sounds a lot nicer to!

Yard B. I assume that the £35 extra a week reflects a move to full livery, which presumably you don't have to do. And even if you do, then that reflects what you would probably be paying for bedding, hay and feed weekly yourself.

Yard B definitely.

If you find the money a struggle you could ask them if there is scope to negotiate your package down a bit, maybe full DIY at weekends to save money or to do some work for them in return for reduced livery.

Unfortunately not, our local area is terrible for yards - I used to be at the only one that is technically on the way to work and they keep in for weeks at a time in the winter (which pone just can't handle) - same for every other yard I have contacted in our immediate area (either that or they have no facilities and with young horse, I am desparately in need of a decent schooling area

).....

Yes, yard B only does full - there are no other options....

Thanks everyone for the replies - was interested in your responses about the cliquey bit - it has been getting on my wick a bit and I hate going down at weekends when I know the yard will be packed....
