Livery yard and dealers query?

I am on a small livery yard at present.

I was told this morning that, a dealer is coming to the yard and taking 6 boxes.

Everyone is up in arms about it and they all want to go and see the owner and tell him that they are not happy.

issues raised include:
lots of people on the yard (sercurity)
no isolation boxes for these horses coming in (catching things)
one lady has a 33 year old and is worried that she is more vulnerable to infections etc etc.
Not enough grazing


Im not sure how I feel about it TBH.

Would it bother you?

I think that the YO needs to clarify what the dealer will be doing.
She needs to explain where the horses are coming from for a start.
The most worrying thing in my mind is the security of the yard with lots of strangers coming to the yard.
I wouldn't want to stay.
 
i think it would depend how big the yard was, so if you say there wont be enough grazing then that would bother me. Also not having an isolation box for whatever reason isnt good either. i think having more people on the yard wouldnt bother me too much, but id want to make sure everything was secure and locked up properly at night - ie that the extra people can all be trusted to do this. Does YO live on site? if so then at least she/he will be able to keep an eye on things and check its all secure at night?
 
It wouldn't bother me personally , but I'm on a large livery yard and we regularly have horses coming in and out .
I'm not sure how I'd feel if I had a 33year old tho

I agree and thats what i said. I got my new horse from a dealer who imports from holland, all have passports, chipped, jabbed etc but i suspect that this is not the case in this instance.

I would not be happy about this. For the reasons mentioned above, comings and goings, horses from unknown yards/places, losing grazing, lack of consistency for your own horse. Loss of arena space also has to come into it - say she has 3 people a day trying out horses?

I would be off like a shot if this happened on my yard.
 
We have had recently a big show producer on the yard and he has bought about 15 horses with him. We have had no problems what so ever, he knows that he has limited grazing and a lot of his are stabled anyway. The other liveries have had no changes to their grazing or stabling.

All that has happened is that the vacant stables have been taken up not by 9 individual owners but just the one.
With reference to the infections by different horses coming and going, most of us go out competeing at the weekend so are just as much at risk bringing infections into the yard as he is.

It works well for us, and he is always helpful if we have any problems with our horses.
 
yes, i had thought about school time too.

there are a few that think they may leave, me being one of them. :-(
 
With 6 boxes they are hardly going to be a big operation. Might be a positive thing, ie 5 less individual owners. Ultimately its up to the YO, if things dont work out you can always vote with your feet.
 
Yep it would bother me. Its only a matter of time before something brings on strangles/ringworm etc.... You don't need that, unless all the horses coming and going are totally separate from the other liveries.

Thats my issue, they are going to be mingled between all our horses.

I think my initial reaction would be that I would be annoyed, due to the fact that strange horses with possible infections would be coming onto my yard.
But I would want more info really on what sort of dealer/producer he is? If they are top quality horses that he will hold onto for a few months and only have a few people viewing etc then that won't be any more hassle than having 6 separate owners coming and going on the yard and that wouldn't worry me.
But if he is a rather shadey dealer that aims to have a high turnover of not so quality horses and buyers then yes I would be concerned and I wouldn't stay.
 
I wouldn't be happy as they will be mixing with your horses. Would insist on a basic health check, worming and seeing a passport if I was your YO and expect them to have seperate grazing as a livery.
 
most YO tend to do a bit of dealing to help pay the rent i have found. my concerns would be where the dealer gets the horses from and if they are to be near others, and the problem i had was on my old yard the YO /dealer had a bad reputation so i found it very hard to sell a horse as when i said where i was people knew about the bad feedback. But as others have said if you have liveries going out to shows they can bring in diseases anyone.

But a producer is not advertising for strangers to come and buy his horses? This is the main issue - he could have 10 people a day turn up to ride the 6 horses he has for sale. A producer is producing for clients - the same people will come and visit/ride their horse and is no different to the stable being rented to individual people - it is the same people coming up each time.

I really hate the idea of lots of people coming to try horses when I am working in the school or preparing for a competition. If my horse has to be on box rest there could be lots more commotion than if it were a normal yard. I really can't see how anyone can think it won't affect the way the yard is run!
 
FMM- this show producer does sell the horses if required by the owners and he buys and produces and then sells on. A potential buyer came on the yard yesterday to view a horse, no one was affected by this at all.

Yes it would be different if there were people coming and going at all times of the day and night but in reality that wouldn't happen.

well it works fine for us and I can honestly say none of us have been affected even with use of the school, we book the school for lessons, and we share the school at all other times.I appreciate that it might not be the same in all cases, it depends how the YO deals with it.

Also if it is a big dealer with lots and lots of horses things could be very different.Ultimately its the YO final word and if people don't like it then they will leave.
 
At the very least, the YO should allocate a separate paddock and tack/store room for these 6 boxes.
A yard within a yard.

Its he viewers and joyriders in and out that woud also be a pain., whihc depnd on type of dealer - highturnover lower end of market -perhaps 4 or5 a week being veiwed and sold, or top compeition horses produced and sold on, after beening seen competing.
