This may turn into a little bit of a rant but bear with me ...

YO is away for the week so muggins here is doing all the 'services' (turning out / mucking out / lunging / feeding / rugging etc.. )

So , Letters were sent out with the liveries bills to inform them that I was 'in charge' and that all services must be written down or I need to be told the day before so I know who needs feeding etc etc .

WELL

Today there were 2 horses on the board for turning out and one needed haying/rugs changed and feeding . (Easy day I thought ...

)

I ENDED UP TURNING 9 HORSES OUT

My last phone call being at 11.30 asking for the horse to be turned out , because they had 'forgotten about her '

Also the majority of the yard are on Ad-lib hay/haylage this is all stored in a barn undercover ready for them to use .
At the moment people 'pick' through it leaving 1/3 of the bale loose and then walked over etc so no-one will use it .

So today 4 bales have been left in the barn UN OPENED and a note left for them to use the open sections (that are neatly stacked) before opening a new bale .
But no doubt I shall go back tonight to find the bale open (incorrectly may I add )

So do you have similar rules if your on a livery yard ?
Am I right to just wait around for messages or should I just ignore them , give all the horses in after 10 a hay net and tell them tough and to put it on the list next time ?

First time I've done this with NO supervision as the WP has left ..

Answers on a postcard ? are they just being rude ? or should I expect this

eta - I'm not being payed to do this even though the yard profits of the services , so I cant just grin and bear it and think of the £££'s !

They are being rude and taking advantage of you.

"Give all the horses in after 10 a hay net and tell them tough and to put it on the list next time ?"

You should do this, why should you wait around for them to remember their horse.

We have a new rule at our yard where we have to give a weeks notice of any assisted help needed. It used to be 24 hours but as people 'forgot' so often they changed it!

It sounds as if they are definatley taking advantage of you tho. Do they do that with the YO and does she stand for it? It must be frustrating to have to hang around the yard incase you have to turn something out!!
Are you not getting anything for helping out? not even money off your bill or something?

YO lets people ring him if they are really stuck as he is based on site 8-5 so he does it after he's done the job he's started .

Even then I reckon its a piss take .

Yeah

I left the farm at 12 today because i'd just finished everything as half the time is taken up recieving phonecalls !

No not getting payed atall , I agreed to do it as some people genuinly can't come down in the morning to turnout ( the furthest paddock is 0.4 miles away

) before work and the weather has been rubbish so horses have come in at night early . So they would be completly stuck

I wonder if the liveries were asked to pay extra if they are asking for things to be done short notice if they would then remember to ask the day before like they are meant to.

I think that really they are taking the p***.

Agree. P*ss take. How can you 'forget' your horse ???
Stick to your original plans. They have to ask you in advance or lump it.
We have rules, no-one takes a blind bit of notice. very frustrating.

Taking the P big style. I am afraid I wouldn't even wait around until 10!
If no sign of owner by 9am neddy would have hay bunged over the door (I wouldn't even waste time filling a haynet) and a bucket of water if needed and tough luck on the owners.

why do you have to do the whole lot??? and i dont understand why your not being paid for your time and trouble???

I would defiantely say "tough, put it on the list next time", but I know it's easier said than done, as I'm a big softie for helping people out too.

As for the hay, I'd have thought it was common sense to use an opened bale first but this gift called "common sense" is soon going to be called "rare sense".

I was asked to do the services because i'm (the onlyone stupid enough) around to do it .

Being payed was never suggested and I thought it would be abit rude to ask

We do have nearly 30 horses on the yard so I don't have to do them all , a % still live out at night as we haven't swapped into the winter fields yet . (thankgod

We have to ask YO the day before or VERY early that morning eg 6.30 am ....otherwise she gets busy doing stuff....she is very obliging if you have genuine probs ie ill/car trouble etc...there are fees payable and it goes on your bill, however if you don't ask then its down to you to sort your horse out.

Don't let them take advantage. If I were you, I would charge for this service full stop but as you've agreed to it, I would expect the YO to either a) make a reduction on my livery or b) offer to do my horse for free when I needed it. Give people a time limit a to when they need to tell you by and if they go over, charge 'em.

i dont know your situation obv' but i think its rude that they havent offered to pay you (they are still being paid for the livery but not actually doing it)!!! without you the liveries would be running wild and free
shocked.gif
could you imagine the state of things when they got back!!

I digress am sorry back to the question,,, i think these liveries should be made aware that you need to work with them and not against them!! Just Until the owners get back!! and a little thought of their own actions on that of others would go along way!!!!
