Hi,

I am after recommendations for livery yards in the area. I’m not looking for a place until the New Year (as I’m in the process of horse hunting right now) but thought I’d better start looking. My horsey connections in my local area have wained as I have been ridding elsewhere for many years and being horseless doesn't help!

I’m currently riding at a yard near Nailsworth, I love the facilities and the people/instructors but it is just a little too far away from home and work.

I am after Part Livery/Assisted DIY – the main thing for me is morning feed and turnout. It needs to have an arena which is lit at night for schooling in the winter evenings and hacking near by.

In terms of location, I live in Yate, the kind of catchment area I’m looking at is Winterbourne, Westerleigh, Old Sodbury, Horton, Hawkesbury and Wickwar.

The nearest to me is Wapley but I have seen that it is up for sale and has been for a while, any info that people have on that one would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks! :)

Leyland Court (Winterbourne) has excellent facilities (XC course, 2 outdoor arenas, show jumps) and runs competitions - not sure if they have spaces though, or what their hacking is like... Castle Farm, Wickwar, has a XC course and an outdoor arena I believe, but I'm not sure what sort of livery they do. Sorry can't be any more helpful!! You could try the Berkeley and District RC for recommendations, and also maybe have a look at the adverts in Patrick Pinker saddlery at Iron Acton. Hope some of that helps! Best of lcuk.

Leyland court has no vacancies and has a waiting list, am currently looking for a stable somewhere in the area, have struggled to find. I called wapley last week they do have stables but I thought they were a bit pricey for a pony though not bad for horses they have a one price only, I didn't relise it was up for sale. There is a lovely yard in hinton which I had my boy on but again is a bit pricey. Grove farm in westerligh is a nice little yard I also spent time on there.

Cor that's a large area you're looking at!

There's a new yard opened up in Winterbourne but don't know anymore about it - might be worth doing a little research into that.
Castle Farm in Wickwar is nice - xc course, outdoor arena and a range of livery options.

As for hacking the further you can get towards to Horton or Hawkesbury the nicer it gets!! :D

Thanks guys, will go and look at Wapley and Castle Farm, I'd looked at both on the Internet. Never heard of Lydes Farm, where abouts in Sodbury is that Luckylou?

Ones I know of in that area beyond Leyland Court (don't know much about many of them):

Kendleshire Farm (near Winterbourne) - quite big yard I think and my RI says good schools. By busy roads though.
Wapley - nice school, hoping to be going to a jumping rally there in December. But don't know what sort of livery they are doing at the moment.
Westerleigh Stables - currently full, lights in school but surface not great, during winter weekday support in terms of horses turned out and brought in, helper at weekends too though not always available.
Lydes Farm is nearer Codrington/Dodington I think if it's the place I'm thinking of.
There is one at Horton - name escapes me at the moment but a friend was there for several years happily. Something Farm I think it is..
Also one near Badminton...again know of someone there but have no idea what it's called.
Not much help am I!

I know of alot of DIY yards so if you wanted DIY instead at any point I could recommend some, however I do not know any round this area not already mentioned that offer part/assisted DIY. Good luck with finding a nice yard, its a great are round here :D

It's Widdenhill Farm in Horton. I was there for a couple of years, lovely place and very nice people. Absolutely stunning riding out over the Badminton Estate...

Turnout is restricted though, despite what it says on the website, at least it was when I was there.

Grove Farm is full although there may be one or two spaces in the next few months as there was talk of a few more stables going up.

Wapley very nice but pricey. Has been on the market for quite a while and no sign of a buyer.

Castle Farm has grass, DIY assisted and full and usually a space so worth a call.

There's another yard in Wickwar with spaces and apparently good facilities, can get the number from my farrier.

I agree with what MD has said about Westerleigh.

Siston - Myrtle Farm does Part Livery.

The yard at Hinton I assume is Alice and Alex Peternell's place? Ford Farm I believe it's called. Big competition yard and I believe again is pricey but AMAZING facilities.

Winterbourne there's Hick's Common Livery stables.

White Cat... Sunnymead... If you want info about those PM me.

Lyde's is a nice looking yard and I know there's somebody on here (and know their username but not sure if they want people knowing where they are!) who is there.

Also Hollisters but I believe that is full with a LONG waiting list.

Bluehorse - I too was at Widdenhill. Loved it there especially the hacking, really friendly, just not the restricted turnout. Was wandering if I know you. :)

I learnt to ride at Wapley back in the day when it was a riding school as well as a livery yard! Riding school closed down about 7 or 8 years ago now when the owner got pregnant. It was nice and had a good reputation at the time but I haven't been there in years so obviously not very up to date information from me....
Fairly unhelpful post but hope you find somewhere good :)

Thanks guys for all your help, much appreciated :D I will do some ringing around to see if I can go and have a look at some of the yards early next month!
