Hi my yard in suppose to be open until 8.00pm ( we have a written contract ) however the yard owner sometimes switches the lights off early in the winter from the farmhouse and disappears, we think to get rid of us early . We have no way of switching on . Liveries end up walking around with torches , I am worried someone will have an accident . Is the owner likely to be breaching their liability insurance . Every one is afraid to complain in case they get asked to leave . Any advice ?

Not really sure - I'm no lawyer but by having a contract with the times of yard opening and having a duty of care (or is that just employers?) then I would have thought she should make reasonable attempts at making the yard as safe as possible?

Thanks just googled liability and there is the occupiers liability act that states a person must take reasonable care of anyone on thier premises . I am sure that his insurers would not consider switching lights off reasonable . Problem no one wants to tackled him about it

I'd get someone to trip you over deliberately, make sure they do a proper job, and you get a really good skull fracture or something, and then you can sue your YO for loads & loads of money, and never have to work again.

Alternatively, you could either:
a) Speak to YO and ask that lights are left on, or (really drastic measure coming up here)
b) Move yards

I don't have proper lights at my yard (my own, no liveries, so not quite the same) but have found a head torch to be invaluable.

Although as you have a contract I think it should be adhered to, but can understand why no-one wants to make waves...

Yeah I'd go for the head torch!!! mine was so comfortable i forgot i was wearing it and got stopped by the police because I was wearing it and it was on and they thought i was flashing them to stop. very red faced about that one!!

Sorry not sure what you are paying but I would be gone................god help if a horse has an issue over night!!

I would have a chat to other people on the yard. You are obviously wanting to be there until it closes, and if you have back up going to speak to him won't be such an issue. Don't go and speak to him as a group, as that is likely to cause problems, but maybe you could broach the subject of a light switch outside? Personally I wouldn't be on a yard which had a closing time, but that is personal choice.
