Has the thought of livery yards ever put you off buying a horse? Ive had a horrible time since Ive owned horses in livery yards and the one I wanted to go to this time because the owner says its not bitchy and doesnt tolerate it is full. Im now questioning whether I should get another as Ive had a horrible time in livery yards and there arent any decent ones around here. Anyone else felt the same?

Maybe I should just hunt on a hireling once/twice a month this winter instead.

i am sorry to hear you have had a horrible time. there are times i could scream really loudly about my yard but mostly i love it there i am surrounded by really supportive people.

my mate is at her maybe 4th yard since she owned her yard and she too has been really unlucky.

i am at my second in 2 years and that is because we moved areas, if you were closer i would tell you to come to me its a great craic at my yard and we are very social :D:D

I've been at my yard 7 years and have no intention of moving! I have some very good friends there, my horse is happy and the facilities suit me.

There are times when certain people get a bee in their bonnet about something and create atmospheres, but i just keep my head down and get on with it. I'm not interested. Sometimes I think the way people go on about stuff at yards makes me think they have nothing else going on in their lives at all!!! :)

Ahh thanks Ibot. I would come to your yard if I were closer. I really dont know what to do re yards. I could look further out but I wont be able to spend lots on petrol. I'll ask around though.

Do what I did - stalk people!! :D Get yourself onto Google Maps, put it on satellite and browse the vicinity - if the big beige patches look like an outdoor arena, zoom in, see if there looks to be stables / horses then pop round and ask if they have livery? If you're brave enough go ask the local farmers if they have a field and old stable (they usually have at least one!) you could rent? All the farmers near me are just foul and not to be touched with a barge pole but this might not be the case where you are! :D

Not actually what I did but I did nose about on Google maps and tracked down names and numbers of the people who had big outdoor arena's. I didn't end up needing to ask anybody as a lady who hires out her outdoor school at her private yard had a space going with just her horses at home so it was an absolute stroke of luck I happened to mention I wanted to move from the scrote of a yard I was on at the time!

Hahaa this is exactly what I did!! Still do to be honest - just to be nosey!!!

I dont like livery yards, we spent less than a year at the last one. The owner of that one said she wouldnt stand for anyone being nasty, but she was the worst one! Weve gone back to renting the whole field to ourselves, its great!!
Maybe that would work for you, renting field and stable if you need one for yourselfe, or with a friend.
