my mare is living out now 24/7 but she won't wear a rug she will have it on fine for a while then goes absolutly mad rips them to shreds and always ends up tangled up so would you
a) leave her out no rug there is lots of natural shelter
b) keep putting rugs on and hoping she doesn't hurt herself seriously? (costs aside)
any opinions welcome

ah a welshie i should have guessed, don't you just love them. She'll be fine unrugged. Especialy if you have lots of shelter. It's not worth the risk of her hurting herself in my opinon.
Lucy lived out unrugged and unclipped last winter and she was 19!

Leave her unrugged, it may be that she is telling you and you're not listening.

I have several horses living out that I think should benefit from being rugged but they all either run away if they see a rug or make it quite obvious that they don't want to wear it. Their choice. One of those is a purebred arabian and it is colder here than in most of Britain for months on end. No rain though, that's one advantage.

Most D's are pretty tough (but I've known some wimps and confirmed couch potatoes too) if she has shelter and plenty of food she'll probably be fine, just keep an eye on her and take it day by day.

yeah i don't really want to put on one but thought i would get more opinions as i keep being moaned at by people on yard about her being unrugged. yeah she will be given a hard feed as she loses condition when out but shes in 12 acres with my other mare

Turn her out rugless she wont shrivel and die as long as shes well fed. My sec D has a rug on for my benefit less mud scraping before I ride , she would survive fine without. She was naked all last winter and probably all her life till got her.

Unless they have a valid point take no notice, she's your horse, not theirs.

If she loses condition you may have to up her feed but it's your choice.

Ignore the people at the yard. I'm guessing she looks something like this, my pony has never worn a rug and lives out in all weather.

Mine is also a Section D and lives out unclipped and unrugged. So did my previous Sec. D.

Your horse will probably be much happier and healthier without rugs - mine always have been.

Got four 5 year olds living out 24/7 unrugged and unclipped and they are 1 Dutch warmblood, 1 Hannoverian, 1 Belgian warmblood and 1 TBx. They have good shelter and are all fit and healthy.
