Alot of horses wont go into a trailer as they appear very small to them the 15.1hh i had until recently would point blank refuse to load in a trailer but will go into a horsebox fine.
Have you tried yours in a box as apposed to a trailer?

I competed a 16.3 hh mare who was hideous to load and after trying everything somebody recommended an 'Intelligent Horsemanship' trained person (basically Kelly Marks/Monty Roberts), I was initially very scathing about the whole thing, I mean what could they do that I hadn't! Well the truth is the can teach horses to go into trailers and boxes without a problem so I'm converted to their way of thinking now. If you go onto thier website, I think its Intelligent Horsemanship (or a search will bring it up) they will be able to give you the local person. Believe me it worked on her and it worked on my very sharp baby too so give it a try.

My horse takes at least half an hour to go into a trailer and then sweats up so much........he hates it.....

He loves going to pony parties in a lorry though.

Sounds like a re swap in the lorry/trailer dept is on the menu for you

Thing is sometimes they DO need a smack to reinforce who is the boss. A smack is not nec a physical one, backing up is effective, lunge line behind the bum (but if you are alone this could be a bit tricky!!) - loads of things you CAN try but you do need help - doesn't matter if the helper isn't horsey.

tried loading with hubby today when horse started to get a gob on hubby clear the five bar gate without touching it wish horse could jump like that. He is not very horses but does try

Yes if you have some one to help it would be so much easier, just to get behind him.

A lot of horses don't seem to like trailers much do they, but if thats what you've got thats what he's going to have to go in! In my experience the nicey nicey aproach rarely works.

Rio went through a phase where she wouldnt load, and she could through the most spectacular hissy fits

I spent hours coaxing and encouraging her with food, using a line behind her etc, nothing worked,

eventually my dad had had enough and smacked her on the bottom once when she was half up the ramp, she walked straight in no problems, after that all he had to do was stand next to the ramp as she walked in and she never hesitated,

now this was a horse that you could not smack, usually sent her into a complete panic, but she was having us on, and was fine ever since, didnt even need dad there after a few trips

One of the girls I went to the ride with today has a prob loading. 2 weeks ago I gave Mustard a right telling off and talking to (not physical force used

) and when he was still dithering I smacked his bottom with an "up up" call and he went straight in.

He must have remembered today - having planted himself at the bottom of the ramp for about 4 mins without moving I walked over, clicked my fingers and he walked straight in (literally just like that) - we were all in hysterics about it as it was so infuriating for his owner and he is just so easily persuaded so long as, apparently, it's me! I told her she needs some more people to give him a pep talk and then hopefully she will always have a finger clicker available!

Our x race horse just walks straight in, but when we got our pony Ebony, she just wouldn't load. In the end we got a lunge line and held it tight behind her - it took some time but it worked. Now she still doesn't want to go in easily but you only have to wave the lunge line at her and she gives up and walks in - it's funny really if you don't have the lunge line she plants her feet on the bottom of the trailer and wont move - show her the lunge line and she almost sighs and walks straight in.

Was feeling chuffed until I saw this post. My lad loaded and travelled on a lorry for the first time today no problem. He has been a pain to load on trailers before. I was hoping that I could transfer this new found confidence on to a trailer (hoping to buy one soon) but now not so sure. He is fine travelling, it was just the loading part. I tried the nicey nicey and the getting tough with him but nothing seemed to work twice. I'm hoping that cos I've had him longer now that he trusts and respects me more

The only advice I can give is to try and park close to something to stop him walking off the sides of the ramp and maybe a lunge line behind him (sorry if you've already tried this). Chum seemed to give in once he realised he was 'trapped'. However, he didn't need any of this with the lorry - we had a few practise runs with food and today he just walked on. Good luck with whatever you try.
