Hi - I have finally bought myself a trailer, and today decided to take my horse out to a local show, I gave myself loads of time for loading, but after 1.5 hours she was not going to go into the trailer, I didnt get upset or cross as unfortunately I was by myself (she has been in a friends trailer with assistance) I tried carrotts, feed etc.

Has anyone got any ideas on how to load a horse by yourself.

Thanks

Did you try taking the partition out? Some horses feel very penned in with that in place. If it doesn't remove, try opening up all ends as much as possible, so there is lots of space and the horse can see a way out.

Try to get her on the trailer. When she resisits and won't walk on any more, make her walk backwards. Be particular that she walks back in a straight line. You may have to do this a few times, but most horses will then be happy to walk on

It may also be worth setting aside a day when you aren't planning on going anywhere, and just load on and off many times until all is going well, that way it takes away any stress

Its all about practise, over and over again. On days when you have all the time in the world.
Def agree about more space & taking out partition, but do try loading with another pony to give confidence as well.
Don't despair & take your time. This is something that you need to get right.... it will make your life so much easier in the long run even if you have to work on this for a good few weeks.
