I am going to be working away for a couple of months and have decided its best all round if I put my boy out on part loan while i'm gone. Have a woman and her daughter going to take him on and i'v said they can ride whenever they want. He's out full time so no mucking out or anything to be done. I'm only asking them 10 pound a week and my mum who has a horse will take him out on the days they can't do.

However I want to draw up some sort of contract after hearing horror stories and the fact that I will be miles away and not able to get back in a hurry should anything go wrong. Is it fair that i ask them to pay for the shoes since they are the ones riding him? Also if he is injured in their care who should pay the bills? I don't want to be paying for shoes and vets bills when I'm not even riding the horse?

What should I include in the contract? Any advice greatly appreciated

have a look at a sample BHS contract, they used to have them on their site, I am sure someone on here mentioned them earlier so I imagine they still have. You can them chop and change it to suit your situatuion xx

You will still own the horse and as it is only temporary you will be paying the insurance, which would include vets fees.

If the horse was going out on loan for a longer period I think it would be fair to ask them to pay something towards insurance. I thought only the owner could pay, but apparently insurance companies are more relaxed about this and allow the loanees to pay sometimes.

Same about the shoes really.

Put in the agreement what they can do with the horse, ie hack, go to Pony Club events, and what they can't, enter a race or an endurance ride, etc.
I also made a stipulation that they had to ride in High Viz when on the roads. Put that the horse has to remain in its present home and when and how the agreement could be terminated, or extended. Give them a list of equipment and what condition it is in.

make sure they have personal rider insurance-definately, this insures them for themselves plus the horse which they are riding/vet fees and third party without affecting your insurance-petplan do a good one.
stipulate what they can/cant do with the horse
make sure you include what costs they have to pay,any quirks the horse has that they are aware of ie-spooky on road etc and what tack he has and whether you want it replaced if lost/broken etc
