I have just told the owner of the horse I have on loan that I can no longer keep her because it hasn't worked out. If we have a BHS loan agreement does she have 30 days before she has to collect her? I don't mind looking after her at all but its hard enough when you have made the decision to give her back, that you have to carry on for another 30 days.

Is this right?

Most owners would want to collect their horse (or have it delivered) asap when a loaner gives notice. I took mine back immediately when loan was terminated by the loaners.

TBH the contract doesnt mean anything really. My loaners had signed up to 30 day's notice but they bought the pony back 3 days after they terminated the contract, and I would rather have had him straight back when it came to it. Your notice period will be whatever you have signed up to, so it's up to you to check the contract you signed.

From an owner's POV, although I wanted my horse back asap, I was very lucky that I was able to move him back to the same yard I had kept him at and where my new horse was. Not everyone will have that luxury so the owner might need some time to sort out a stable etc.

If it's the standard loan agreement then you should give her 30 days' notice and IIRC you will have to return her to the owner, unless agreed otherwise.

Personally I would chat to the owner to agree a time to return/collect her. She might want to come and get her early, or she might need the full 30 days to arrange somewhere for her horse to go, depending on circumstances.

If the loan contract states a 30 day notice then you have to honour it, if the owner can not take the horse back sooner.

I know it seems like a huge inconvienance to you, but having a horse is a huge responsibility, and you cant just chuck them away when you cant be arsed any more! That sounds harsh i know, but having been stung on both ends of a loan before. It amazes me that peopel just seem to think that as the horse isnt there, then it isnt there problem when they decide they no longer want them any more. You have to think of the horse here as well.

Owner may not have room for the horse and may have to make arrangements it all takes time. I would be prepared to sit out the 30 days notice period and continue to care for the horse to the high standards that where expected of you.

If yoru owner does take the horse back sooner than i think your lucky, but it shouldl not be expected.
