Sorry if this has been covered before, but is it sufficient for the loanee to have a copy of the passport rather than the original?

passports are not proof of ownership and do have to do with horse.

I know people have written to the passport issuer informing that the horse is on loan and no transfer of ownership is to take place....

Makes you wonder yet again why weve all had to pay out for passports I have never been asked to show mine for anything even vet visits.

The Person who has the horse on loan has the passport, when I put my old mare (I say old as in I have sold her now) her passport went with her, It is not proof of ownership but I took a photocopy of it to keep myself.

I would want to be able to trust anyone who had a horse of mine on loan.

Mm, so you have to really be sure about the loanee then !

Of course! You are trusting them with a living creature.

The passport is almost completely irrelevant, it's a piece of paper that doesn't prove ownership. However it is law that the useless bit of paper stays with the horse.

Well, yes! If you don't trust them with the passport, do you actually trust them with your horse?

If you're uncertain of the loanee, get vet / instructor references for them. Ask for proof of their name and address; I gave my last loan horse's owner a copy of my council tax bill and my passport, so she knew I was a real person and had a real address. Make sure you know the address at which the horse will be Kept while its on loan, and go and visit the yard if possible. Go and visit the horse a couple of times once its gone on loan.

I believe the passport should reside at the same address as the horse so you could give it to the YO where the horse is to be kept (maybe write out a receipt for it so you have evidence) if you're at all concerned about the loanee (either that they might sell horse on or that they might lose it).

Our YO holds all of the passports for horses on her yard (it's in the livery contract). We're welcome to ask to see it whenever we like though and are allowed to take it home if we need to copy it or change address on it or anything like that so long as we bring it back as soon as possible.

This also makes things easier if the vet has to come in an emergency or if the horse has to be transported to the vets in an emergency.

According to the loan agreement I've just used for my TB it says the passport remains in the care of the owner but can be requested for use at any time by the loanee. As I know my girl won't be travelling anywhere in the first few months (she needs bringing back into work) I'll keep it for now until they decide if they definately want to buy her.
