Ok - so yesterday I got a text from the owner of the horse I have on loan. The text said he was thinking of selling and was I interested in buying him...

So I panicked and then worked out (with your help

)that he isn't really the horse for me and sent him a message this morning saying that I had enjoyed riding the horse, but if I was going to buy i really wanted something a bit younger that i could compete and hunt. I also said that I would help him find a new home as it would be important for to him to go to the right place...

Then I got a response today saying - that it was ok I can keep him on loan as he knows he has a lovely home with me and he hoped i hadn't been upset by him asking

So now I'm not sure what to do....

should I keep him on loan and see if I do manage to get on a bit better with him in the future (had him 10 months so far)?

Should I just buy him - then i could loan him out to someone else?

or should I try to find a new loan home for him? Or put feelers out for a new permanent home for him (although he isn't mine to sell... )?

Feel very confused....

I think the best thing is to help find him a loan home with someone else.

It wasnt fair that the owner just txt you like that and is now saying ah never mind keep him? whats that all about

One thing I will say is DO NOT BUY HIM and loan him out - thats just crazy!!! Only do that if you have the brass lying around to waste - i.e you are a millionaire!!

It is obvious that you want something more suited to your needs and be fair on you and the horse - help find him a new home which is very commendable - its so nice to see that you care for him - most would have dumped him back with his owners by now so well done!!!

were you thinking of giving him back before the text? if so its a good oppurtunity to find him a new home. If not I would keep him for a bit longer and give yourself some time to think about it some more and see how things go. I definately wouldn't buy him and loan him out!

It seems the owner was only interested in selling as they thought they had a ready made buyer in you. Saying no has made them realise that they might have to take the horse back and arrange to sell it themselves - who wants the hassle? You are not under any pressure here so don't worry too much

if you still want him on loan then keep him.
if you want to buy a horse of your own, give him back and get one you really want.
That's what i'd do anyway

Brow brow - I tend to agree with you - I must say the random text and then saying I can keep him on loan has just made me very confused.

He isn't right for me - I know that... but you know what us horse people are like

I want him to be in the best place for him - emotion over sense etc etc...

I know they buying thing does sound silly now I look at it... I think I am just looking for ways out...

Thanks for your comments

Widget, at least the owner was polite enough to think to give you a first offer on the horse. He has probably realised that if he is to sell it's either now or next year. Take your time, if you are enjoying riding the horse at the moment then keep going. At least you know the owner is honest and up front with you so you do know what is going on.

Yes - I was thinking about trying to find a new loaner for him as it hadn't really been working out for me, but was struggling to find the right moment... I think I was so relieved at the text yesterday that this has now thrown me again...

Yes - seems that was it. I thought they needed the money - but actually I think they just thought I might like him...

They are lovely the owners - and when I took him it was sort of as a favour as they urgently needed to rehome him... so I think I worry about upseting them by saying we aren't getting on so well...

And I messed up a bit by saying I was enjoying him in my text to them... because he isn't a bad horse - but I've lost my confidence on him and am finding it hard to get back...

hi, sorry dont want to be nosey, but wats the horse like etc, cause i have loan horses all the time as well as my own 3. and at the present time my loan is a bit to slow 4 me so my yard hand rides her .
