Simple question.

If you were considering loaning a horse would you have it vetted?

If not why? and if so why also?

When I got my loan horse I didn't have him vetted as I knew what was wrong with him (mild osteoarthritis of the pastern joint) and that was why he was up for loan rather than being sold. His owner was very upfront and honest about his condition and his quirky ways so I trusted that she had nothing else about him to hide. But if it was loan with a view to buy I may well have had him vetted.

personally i would get it vetted, simply because it puts your mind at ease and could help claiming on insurance if something happens soon after youve got it on loan.

Oooooo never thought of that! I haven't with any loaned in or out. Usually, they are on loan because they are not doing a job or they could but there is no rider. The owners want the best for the horse and would, I'd hope, disclose any possible worries. What do the loaners say about the idea?

Not asked tbh, I've not contacted the owner yet.

I've loaned in the past but never had them vetted but I DID know the horses very well beforehand so didn't see the necessity. Just wondered if it would be normal to do so not knowing the horse. Don't want to come across as being a freak
