My friend is splitting up with her husband and has decided to reduce her 2 horses to just 1.....knowing how the market place is at the moment is she better advertising as a Loan or Free to a good home ( with a contract ).

Suggestions welcome.....

If she still want some say with a contract shell be better with a loan, as free to a good home is the same as selling she wont have any more say over it.

If it's the type of horse that someone would want, she will be able to sell it.

If it's the type of horse that nobody would want, she should have it PTS, not give it away.

If she thinks she'll be able to sell it but doesn't really want to, then a contracted loan could work, however it will probably be as difficult to find a decent loan home as it will a buyer.

Totally agree on the PTS, but in this case he is 100% happy hacker its just she has my mare on loan who is smaller and her daughter can ride her and the one she is looking to rehome is 16:2hh ( don't get me wrong this is a heartbreaking decision so contact would definitly be required ) - thanks for your repy

If she loans the horse she still has some say over his future. If she gives him away or sells him she doesn't. I guess it comes down to finances and whether she'd be able to take him back if she puts him on loan and it doesn't work out.

FWIW I would never give a horse away unless it was to a known and trusted friend. You never know quite who the recipient was otherwise and where the horse could end up.

A 16.2hh happy hacker should still be able to find a new home even in this climate, so I would suggest she try to sell him. She can vet the homes and choose the best one for him, at which point she can discount the price if needed. If she simply gives him away, she's very likely to attract the wrong sort of people who will be selling him a week later!

Always loan. If the people work out really well and she is happy with them, she can offer to sell for peppercorn value (or possibly even an actual value if he has some to the loaners) once she has had some time to be really sure they are right.

Can not see what advantages free to good home would offer if she has a genuine interest in the future of the horse. Its pretty much only good for dumping them on someone else. Would also echo what was said above about the "contract" having basically no value where you give away for free.

I know of a number of happy hackers who've sold easily in the last few months so there is definately a market for them out there. I'd say def try to sell or long term loan with view to buy. PTS is a tad extream for a healthy horse??

My local hunt is putting down several healthy horses a day at the moment - with hay at £7-9/bale, some owners are not coping.

Not at all saying is the case for the OP, of course - as many has said, if the horse is saleable, then it will sell at the right price. Lots of people looking for a bargain in winter. The problem with a loan is the horse can be sent back at any time maybe with a huge vet bill.
