So ive decided to loan my horse out, i will write up a very specific contract and put in every tiny detail and will thoroughly vet a potential loanee! i only want the best for my boy! ;)
But wot do you guys ask for in terms of references, and where they are to keep them etc, and getting to know the person in general?
Id like to say i was a good judge of charactor and can generally tell when someone is dishonest??? i think?
Any comment much appreciated :)

i asked for her trainer's number who was BE accredited and spoke to the YO as well.

my contract has some very specific clauses in it too.

Unfortunately a number of horses have disapeared when on loan. However plausable the person loaning the horse appears to be do not trust anyone.

No genuine person should take offence if you require clarification of their true identity.

My advice would be:

Before loaning the horse have it Freezemarked on it's shoulder and also in addition Micro-Chipped. This will ensure that it can be identified in the future.

Ask to see the original copy of the Passport, Driving Licence and Rates bill of the person loaning it and photocopy them. This will ensure that you have a true record of who they are.

Once you have agrred the terms of the contract get a specialist equine solicitor to check it out to ensure that it can be enforced.

For the sake of both parties get the horse vetted prior to going out on loan so that their is a true record of it's current state of health.

I would want to go and visit the yard where the loaner would be keeping the horse and speak to the YO/YM there,
find out whether they'll be having lessons - I'd like to speak with their instructor.
Have they had horses before? are they registered with a vet? saddle fitter? or back person? all would be suitable referees.
Also agree with the above poster who said to make sure the person is who they say they are, ask to see 2 documents with a name and a home address on.

Good luck, hope all goes well. You can download a loan agreement that you can adapt to your own situation from the BHS website.

Ive had someone enquire, she lives a village or two away, she coming tomorrow and will be thoroughly questioning her, a everyone knows everyone round her so will ask about regards her too ;) if my horse is maybe what she is wanting?
I was thinking if she/someone was wanting to keep him on there land, i wouldnt beable to get refferences off a YO/M? what could be done in this instance do you think???

If the person is fairly local you could start off with a fortnights trial, you could always drive past the field every day for the first week just to check that everything is fine. Or you could ask if the horse can be kept at your yard for the trial period.
Where does the person ride now? could you get a reference from their riding school? or from whoever's horse they currently ride?
Would the horse have a companion? if there are horses there already, I would have thought the person would be able to get a reference off a vet or farrier?
If there are no other horses there, I'd be asking for my horse to have a companion!
