As above please - i am thinking about loaning a horse out - who pays the transport - i would imagine that it would be like selling a horse - where the buyer/loaner has to pay for the transport.

Would that be correct?

Thanks.

The three horses I've sold have all been transported by me to the new owners. I've had three on loan that the owners brought to me, those I've bought I've mainly collected but did arrange delivery for one as it was such a long journey and the latest the previous owner was travelling up to within 30 miles of me and it seemed sensible for her to put my new horse on the lorry and bring her along and I met them at the competition she was attending with one of her other horses. Saved me a good couple of hours travel.

So I'd say decide what you want and get the prospective loaners to agree.

Personally, I thinks it's best if the owner takes care of this, the transport/handling and the cost, after all it is still their horse, their responsibility to ensure the horse has travelled safely and arrived at the new loan premises, if it’s done this way you can avoid any potential pit falls on both sides.

Owner has piece of mind where the horse has actually gone to, knows the horse has arrived safe and well, any loading problems where the horse could get injured etc, the owner has had to deal with.

Of course I think a contribution toward the travel costs should be offered and is expected.

Agree with Kenzo on this one. my last loan horse was delivered by the owner (2 hours away) as she wanted to ensure he got there safe and also to check the yard and to make sure he settled ok. then when i gave notice on him (as i brought my own) she insisted on picking him up to ensure he got back safe, although i did keep the insurance on him running till the following day so he was covered when he travelled home.
It is nice i think if the owner can deliver the horse, but understandably this is not always possible, but if your thinking of getting one, and the owner has no transport, maybe hire a box or a transport company and maybe agree to pay half each.

I transported my loan horse to her new home as I wanted to be sure she got there safely and to see how she settled in before I left her.

Thanks everyone - i probably wasnt clear - i will be going to the new yard - i meant who is expected to pay for the expenses - as it is probably going to be about £180 - i was always going to go to the new yard as i want to see it and make sure he is ok.

TBH I don't think there is a clearly correct answer, it would really depend on what was agreed between the 2 parties.

From a personal point of view, if the loaner was local and given I have my own transport I would happily drop horse off and cover the small cost.

If loaner was not local then although I would be happy to transport the horse I would expect the loaner to cover the cost.

If I didn't have my own transport then it would be loaners responsibility, both ways, unless I terminated the contract early, in which case I would expect to have to cover the collection
