I am considering loaning one of my horses out. Can’t sell him as he’s had colic surgery but I don’t get on with him - we just have never clicked... ive never loaned a horse out before how do you find loan homes?

I personally have found part-loans through social media adverts in groups and one from preloved! Not sure if either of these is any use to you? Also seen some advertised on pin boards in country strores

my loan horse came to me by word of mouth. may be worth asking your YO if they know of anyone reliable or contact local riding club or pony club, they sometimes have newsletters going out so it could be put on there. ask your farrier or vet if they know of anyone. or an ad in local feed merchants

I have loaned twice (as in been the recipient of a loan). First time I was randomly offered a horse. Wasn't really looking but had appeared on the scene helping take care of MrPF's horse so was asked if I wanted one too. ? So you could just think if there's anyone out there who you know might be looking and would be a good home. Second loan horse is the companion pony. I found her through a wanted advert but again the owner knew who we were and drives past our house everyday so knew we look after our horses...

I would start by asking around for anyone who might be suitable.

I know someone who bought a BE horse who had had colic surgery and evented him at BE Novice herself. Are you sure you can't sell him BB?

Horse network and word of mouth - not as comprehensive but more likely to get a recommendation or known contact. Failing that, social media ad.

Your local facebook / preloved may well have wanted ads (although more likely in the spring when weather is better!)
as above word of mouth is idea, local instructors, riding clubs etc.

If you go for a general public ad then be prepared for lots of day trippers and dreamers who may well not be suitable.

If you want to keep him at home / wherever he is now - don't rule out two part loaners - many more people can commit to 3-4 days a week that can't commit to 7 days.
When I was pregnant I had 2 part loaners which worked out really well - they had set days and the arrangement suited us all.

I will potentially be looking for something to loan in the next month or so, ill be looking via word of mouth - vet, farrier, instructor etc.
I think there are more people out there looking for loans than there are horses looking for loan homes so I suspect you'll have an easier time finding somewhere suitable :)
Because of this I will also try an ad on horsequest - as one of the more reputable sites, I wonder if people contemplating putting their horse out on loan might look out for who is looking for what before they place their own more public advert. And well, you never know. So maybe review wanted ads too?
