Mums are always concerned about safety whatever activities our children are doing and no matter how old they are! If you’ve been riding for 12 years you’re obviously older and you should have built up a good level of experience and knowledge of horses. As Shay rightly says horse riding is a dangerous activity, but that’s true of many everyday things we do in life. All you can really do is explain what steps you will take to minimise the risks, but if horses are your passion your mum should try to put her feelings aside and support you. I am mum to a daughter who events and it is completely natural to feel anxious, but that is not a reason to stop her doing what she loves.

I don't think that your Mother will stop worrying - as others have said that is what Mothers do. You could however reassure her by taking your trainer with you when you try the horse - and have her opinion about whether it is suitable for your current ability. Agree that you will always wear a helmet for riding, and (if you use one) a back protector. If you are hacking alone let her know the route and call when you leave and when you get back. Ultimately she is right that it can be dangerous, so really it is up to you both to agree the ground rules to lessen the risk. Good luck and I hope that you find the perfect horse!
