Just wondered how many people loan a horse before buying?

After having to sell one of my horses on sunday i decided it was easier to sell a horse if it is already out on loan, also after bad experiences i don't think i would buy again without a trial loan first.

Just wondered what others opinions were

I had my first lad on loan for a year before we bought him. When we took him on, we were looking to buy a horse, but the owner was not ready to let go - she just wanted to loan him out, so we decided to give loaning a go. It worked out brilliantly, as I got to see every side of my boy and knew him pretty well.

The only downside is if you are loaning with view to buy, agree a price first, as the more work you put into the horse, the more it is worth - obviously the owner can then cash in on that at a later date.

Similarly, having loaned out a horse "with view to buy" I have had horses completely ruined to the point they return home worthless, and I then have to spend a year or more getting them right again.

It's a really dodgey area I'm afraid. As a seller I don't think I would ever do it again, as a buyer, I would but only with a contract in place to agree a purchase amount.

I loaned my horse for 6 months before he went up for sale and I got him, was ideal for me as he was my first horse. It gives the buyer a chance to really get to know if they want the horse, and the seller knows that the horse is going to the right person.
