My horse is injured and may be off work for a long time.

I thought this may be an oportunity to gain experince with a school master, easy to ride horse mainly eventing but all dissaplines really.

I am an experienced owner and rider but sometimes lack confidence when competing so thought riding a horse that will help me out and that is experinced should help me improve on this.

What are the chances of me finding such a horse and where should i look?

Its not as easy as you think. I loaned an experienced SJ mare for the same reasons (lack of confidence, rusty etc). No problem finding one but the one I chose was a 16 year old mare, off for the last year having foal. To cut a long story short, she was stiff, didn't have a 12 foot canter stride and pretty scopeless (at this age). End result was a really serious rotational fall at 80cm (BS!).

Now sticking to my very scopey clever youngster and hoping to go BS (safely) next year.

Sorry to be negative but just something you need to bear in mind with older horses - they might not be what they once were.

I loaned mine out a couple of years ago - did it all through word of mouth and went to check out the yard etc first. I would only have loaned via word of mouth to someone I knew had backup from trainers I trusted. The person I loaned to came recommended by the 4* eventer she worked for. My horse took her round PN and N and she loved him. So I think you need to a) be putting the word out amongst your trainers and b) be prepared to think about moving yards locally.

Also - be wary - I went to look at a supposed novice schoolmaster who was stiff as a board and had a horrible technique over a fence. The woman swore blind there was nothing wrong with him. A friend of a friend took him on - turned out he'd seriously damaged his neck in a fall and should'nt be jumping.

Thanks fot your replies.
I understand it may not be simple and alot of it will be through word of mouth and the owner will have to trust me with their horse!

I know that it will be difficult finding an easy straightforward horse and the rider has to put in alot of imput and its the combination that gets results not just the horse or rider individually!
