Loaning horses with problems.

Ok , haven't been on here for a while.
I have two horses (and they both have their problems).
I've found myself in the position that I can't keep the two of them , really I'm going to struggle to keep one, therefore i'm having to really consider loaning or selling one or both of them.
The problem is, the big coloured mare isn't 100% right and the pony deserves more than to be passed on now. Therefore trying to loan Sol (my riding horse) out is probably the best option.

Now my question is, am I just asking for trouble loaning out a horse with problems (not behavioural problems I hasten to add , she is an absolute gem)

If I am 100% honest , is it the same as loaning out any other horse?

Ideas and honest opinions wanted please.
 
Depends what the/those problems are. If not behavioural but physical, you just have to be clear what it is and how you'd like it to be managed.
 
If its just health problems you might be lucky and find someone, ultamately it depends on the severity of the health problem. If its any type of behavioural problem then I doubt you'd find anyone that would be willing to have the horse on loan. People might be interested in having it as a project but I doubt anyone would risk having the horse on loan, getting it going nicely to have the owner ask for it back.. You'd be better off offering it for a nominal amount to someone you trusted.
 
Yes I don't see why you cannot loan them out I suppose it all comes down to what the problems are, if it requires extra money or handling etc and if the loanee is aware and accepts this and is prepared to do as necessary.
 
She has navicular which was diagnosed when she was a 4yo (she's now 6) so obviously that needs to be managed correctly?

She's not a project. She's young , but she's not a project - I'd be happy if she went to someone that wanted to hack her out or keep her as a pet! But I know in reality that as she is (a strapping 17hh ISH) she's going to attract people that want a little more than a pet :D
 
my boys on loan at moment he has navicular in front and no cortaflex management my loaner pays for his suppliment and is aware of his care (remedial shoeing) he also has laryngeal paralysis, i fund it hard to get a loaner for him but found one in the end i was very straight forward with everyone

You will find on who will take a navicular horse, is he just hacking?
 
At the moment she's not in work (well apart from the occasional hack when I have time) but my vet has given her the OK to carry on with whatever (hacking , schooling etc) as long as she is ok. She's also barefoot at the moment and not on any bute.
 
Well in that case, I don't see how clearly stating this but also saying that she must be trimmed/shod by knowledgable farrier or equine podiatrist so help relieve pressure and also, if someone is interested and they don't know much about it - educating them goes a long way.

If I were to take her on, the cost of maintaining a horse with this syndrome (I assume it's not true navicular or you may not still be riding her) would be more than a 'normal' horse so you just need to make it clear.

Xrays pulled up that she had changes consistent with navicular disease and that there was new bone formation (I'd have to pull out the vets hospitals report tell you the details) this was as a 4yo but there has been no significant deterioration since.

And thankyou , I do hope so, I don't really want to let her go , but needs must atm :(
 
I wouldn't hand her over to a novice rider , no.
Not because she is a liability , just because she deserves more than that really.
 
I could be interested - you're in Wales right? I'll be relocating in the next couple of months once job is sorted and will NEED a horse, have been sharing the current one for 13 years! Am happy to hack but also really enjoy improving their way of going so a bit of schooling but nothing heavy would suit me too.

I haven't even thought about where I'd keep a loan horse, was more looking towards a share, but your Sol does look lovely tho I might need a stepladder!
 
ah, well knowing that its navicular then I don't think you'll have any trouble loaning her out! I'd love a 17hh ISH mare to hack about!
 
At least you know exactly what it is and how to manage it - my part loan has rotation in both front feet and when I started to part loan her I knew she was lami prone therefore limited turn out, feeding and regular riding needed. Go for it, the right person will turn up and things will turn out fine!! :)
