My horse will be going on loan soon and wondered how often people check there horses? I was thinking going to see him after a couple weeks to make sure he's settled ok then wasn't sure how often I should check him.

It's your horse so totally up to you.
I use to check every week until I was happy that the home was right and she was being looked after. Do what you are happy with

i kept a casual eye on things via FB, i am regularly sent pics, and i have no reason whatsoever to think he's not being looked after. so i have no need to go check him. i have a few bits for him, so will go drop them off at some point, but not to 'check' on him.

if i had any doubt, or niggles at all, i'd check regularly. actually, that's a lie. i'd bring him home...

As often as possible until your 100% happy, i loaned my old boy out last year, they had him a month, in that time i checked on him once, after they had had him 2 weeks, i commented at that time that i was concerned that he had dropped weight (hes a good dooer), 2weeks later i was asked to collect him & in the space of 2 weeks he went from looking a little lean to an RSPCA case. I wish id checked him more often, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. On the other hand my other gelding is on loan 90 miles away, ive only seen him twice since they have had him, but the field they keep him in is owned by a friend & i also have friends who keep their horses next door to them & my sister is 2mins down the road as well, so plenty of people to keep tabs on him for me. Just make sure if you cant check on him someone you trust can for you.

The people that have Axey on loan ring me every week, I went and saw him after they had him a month and again a month later. They have only had him for 3 months and I'm due a visit soon. I can go over there whenever I want even if they aren't there.
I'm quite happy they are looking after him and they love him :)

I used to go and check the yard/stable/turnout etc out before I sent the pony, then go and visit a couple of weeks later. If I was happy I'd generally leave them to it, and stick my head in now and again, just to say hello (I'd always ring). Most good ones would stay in touch, proudly giving you show reports etc. If I was at all worried, I'd visit more often, and would give notice if really worried. I've had a few good loaners over the years, and a couple of bad ones. Its not an ideal thing, and I've come to the conclusion that I'd rather sell and buy!
