Hi all, can anyone help - I am completely confused.

I was planning to breed from my mare this year and then try to loan her to a small stud next (she is unlevel - vet doesn't think hereditary - can explain more). But someone just made the very valid point that that will mean that *IF* I find a stud that would like her, she'll be going off to be loaned/covered for 2nd time with my foal at foot. Which sounds problematic to me.
So I am now thinking I should try to loan her this year. Has anyone got any experience of loaning/copy of a loan agreement for this type of thing? And does anyone have any suggestions of studs to approach in the Oxon/Berks area.
I want to do the right thing by my horse but am having a headless chicken moment right now.
She has no papers/pedigree (not her fault -she is a lovely type, honestly worth breeding from) and so I'd be looking to find a small stud that wants to breed really good allrounders, not Olympic horses. She is coloured by the way.
thanks guys.

I'll be honest - I don't think there are professional breeders out there who would want a mare without papers.

We loan a couple of broodmares as part of our breeding program, but I wouldn't take a mare on loan with someone else's foal at foot. The most important thing is to have a contract, and to both be on the same wavelength - as a loanee it is very important to me to be able to treat the mare as your own, as breeding involves investing a hugh amount of your own time and money - often more money than the mare is worth herself.
If I was loaning a mare out I would want to satisfy myself that the people my mare was going to were very experienced breeders - its risky enough without raising the stakes.

I think Touchwood is right, with the amount of mares available it is very unlikely that a stud would want an unpapered mare on loan. If she had a good competition record & had proved herself as a broodmare ie producing good stock then you would increase your chances of finding someone. Having said that a small breeder might be interested but you are going to have to accept you may struggle. Good luck.

Do you have any photos. Can I ask why you want to loan her out as a broodmare rather than breeding from her yourself as you were originally planning. Personally I would breed from her yourself first and then let her rest for a year (especially if she is a maiden mare) and then talk to a stud about loaning her as then you have a foal to show aswell which may make up for her lack of papers. I'm open to PMs aswell if it helps.

thanks all of you for replying. i know, i wish i had papers for her and a better competition record but fate has dealt us both a rubbish hand which isn't either of ours faults! Unfortunately that's life and horses as I have discovered!

Rocky - thanks - to be honest i've got myself so confused i can't remember if i even considered that option! i think i prob discounted it for financial reasons - i am a one horse owner and the year of her resting and me paying for livery of both her and foal (and prob at diff locations, and not being able to ride either ) is probably what put that option down the list of my befuddled mind, but i agree i should think again. i do remember thinking if they could see she'd bred a smart foal that might help. thanks for the offer of pm - writing things down helps!!
