Is there a 'market' for project horses to go on loan? Do people loan them or are they just interested in buying? Do people worry that they will put work in and owner take back?

I have a 15.2hh full TB mare, who needs to be restarted and worked after a injury to her knee. Because of this she can no longer be jumped but has fabulous paces.

She is far too sharp and forward going for me and i have absolutely no interest in having her as a riding horse, however i will never ever sell her again and feel at 7 years old she is far too young and pretty to be my (expensive) glorified pet.

I could put her in foal, but i would be worried that the foal would come out with the same sharpness

She is easy to handle and a real sweet heart, but she is a full TB, and by Another Hoarwithy (well known for throwing sharp horses). She would also have to stay at my yard no questions as she is my other horses field companion.

Sorry didn't mean this to sound like an ad

Just curious on people thoughts.

i wouldnt consider loaning something tht needed tht much work, though i generally dont like the idea of loaning.

also keeping herat your yard reduces possible people able to help. if shes sharp put her to something horizontal like a cob type?

if you do go down loan route though, can you write up a long term contract so tht if someone took her on they would have some assurance you wouldnt sell, or alternatively just offer her out for someone to ride, prob get more interest, if she is still yours and you cover al the expenses, but get her worked/schooled for free, the rider looking after her daily care?

I have no worries about money, i can well afford to keep her, so yes maybe just advertise for a rider maybe a good idea, i just dont like the idea of her sat in a field.

If she has to stay at your yard, then that restricts you a lot.
If sheis toosharp for you, that restricts you a lot.
Someon who has the skill to bring her round may not want to, in their eyes, be 'unpaid trainer ' working on and inproving a horse for you, from which they won't gain as an owner ,and paying expenses for her too?

Your best bet maybe to offer free riding in return for schooling her / help,
How sharp is she?
Needing a pro to school,or just a keen and experienced rider?

We have loaned so many horses in the past. My sister and I love bringing them on, project horses give you so so much satisfactio. Way more than schoolmasters. My boy is a schoolmaster and of course I get 1 million % happiness from him, but my sisters' horse ex racehorse couldnt trot or circle when we got him on loan now is dressage champ, x-ciuntry expert, sweet natured boy and that is so satisfying knowing we have done all that.

Another thing though, the trend of people wanting to GIVE their horses away is over i think. I have been desperate for another project gelding, 14.3hh-15.3hh for two maybe three years now. People can get SO much money for horses that EVERYONE sells now.
I love long-term loan, good honest homes are out there and the project horses are the best learning curves. good luck finding a good home x x x

I think you could loan her, but it would have to be a proper long term/permanent loan contract.

However I do think you would struggle to find interest. Not that many people are willing to loan a horse with issues that needs complete restarting and can never be jumped - there's a possibility they'd put months of work into her and you'd turn round and take her back or sell her. Having her stay on your yard is also something that would restrict your interest a lot.

You might find someone, then again you might not. You might be better off paying somebody experienced to restart her and school her for a while, because you would have a lot more interest loaning her as a fairly well schooled dressage horse than in her current state imo.

I do think that if it was to work, you would have to take a back seat and let the person get on with it. Nothing worse than an interfering owner breathing down your neck all the time.

I am more than happy to take a back seat!! Who ever wants her can have her as theirs, do what they want except jumping, feed what they want, she can be theirs! She just has to stay at my yard as i don't want my horse left on his own.

She doesnt need completely restarting, but hasnt been ridden for about 5 months.

Sorry but I wouldn't have a project horse on loan. If I'm going to do that much work with something, I'll be b*ggered if I'm then going to hand it back sweetly and say 'here you go'! People pay for that service; like when you send your horse to a training yard or similar I guess.

I have to agree with the above, I would most certainly charge to bring on a project horse owned by someone else. Although you may be able to find a rider who would school free of charge as sounds like you'd be willing to let them compete at dressage when the horse is ready etc, I'm sure you'd get a lot of interest in that kind of situation

Oh yes, as said, they can pretty much have her, i will never be brave enough to ride her, not that she is a lunley, but she needs confidence and experience, both of which i don't have, so who ever has her can pretty much keep her.

Thank you for all your responses
