I've never owned a horse, but have loaned/part loaned/looked after various horses since about 11 years old (23 now). Main reasons financial, and lack of time. Its a dream of mine to own, and I think this may be becoming more of a reality as I'm more secure in my career and will be moving closer to parents (who can help with horses when I'm sick/on holiday etc.) in the next few years. I've got it in my head that owning will be totally different to loaning as I'm a worrier and constantly worried about what might happen when im with/riding other peoples horses and what they think of me. I've got visions of just having fun as I won't have to worry so much, and only have myself to answer to. Is this the case, or is it more worrying owning as you have to sort the problem out, rather than having to tell the owner. I'm thinking along the lines of injury, lameness, horse escaping - I'm paranoid about these things, whereas owners seem to be very laid back about issues occurring. just musing really....

I think owning was worse for me initially because I just found it so overwhelming. Don't get me wrong I know my stuff and I am confident around my horse but the enormity of the fact he was actually mine was a bit mind blowing ... BUT knowing they are yours is such an awesome experience. I love my boy to his very bones :)

When i loaned i saw it no different as owning except ponies werent en, officially mine . the care and attention was same. the love for them was same. vet called if needed as if myown. The worry over them was same just didnt own them :)

More control and an empty bank balance

Exactly and more responsibility if something changes in your life and you are loaning you give notice to end the loan and at the end of the notice sorting out what happens next to the horse is not your issue but if you own it's on your shoulders .

Not much difference for me, in fact almost worse loaning - I have had one on loan recently and I was MORE careful with them than my own!!

I own two and loan a companion. I feel so much more nervous about the loan pony when she's ill. With my horses I can make whatever decision I see fit at the time. However with the loan pony I'm always second guessing what her owners would do/say. It's a bigger initial decision buying your own as you can't send it back but then once it's yours you can make any decisions without worrying what the owner will think.

Its exactly like this. Horse I'm sharing atm pulled a shoe while owner was on holiday and it twisted, there was some blood, i spent the whole week after having visions of accesses, convincing myself he was lame even after he'd been re-shod etc etc. I think (i may be wrong) if it was my own i would think 'oh bummer, he's pulled a shoe on a Friday might, no weekend riding for me' and when i told his owner she was so apologetic that i couldn't ride at the weekend! She's so laid back with everything!
