why do people think that if they can't afford to buy a horse that they can afford to loan one? i understand that some people can't afford £££s to outlay on buying a horse but i'm concerned that people who really can't afford to keep a horse think that its feasable to take one on loan?! just had an email from one lady who said "i can't afford to pay for a horse that needs a lot of attention and care" but i would like your horse on loan...:confused:
 
I think there are lots of people who find themselves in circumstances where they are able to afford livery, feed, shoes, vets, insurance, competition entries, regular lessons as a monthly budgeted thing, and yet haven't got in excess of a couple of grand to buy a decent horse. Sure, easy to say "just save up while horseless what you'd spend on the monthly horsekeeping fund"...but life doesn't always work out this way.

Me for example - I own a horse that can no longer do the job for which she was intended. So I loaned her to a friend who will keep her as a happy hacker. I now have a new horse on loan to me because I haven't got the cash NOW to go and buy, and as I'm not getting any younger, I've already spent ten years away from horses and don't intend to spend any more time away from riding, it suits me to get something on loan. And I have a perfect horse that fits the bill for both me and the owner.

However, having said all that, I do think that someone had a hell of a cheek to suggest you loan a horse you clearly have for sale.
 
And now I'm wondering if I misunderstood your OP. Someone who can't afford a horse that needs a lot of care and attention really needs a pet rock, not a living animal.

Ha ha haaaa! But so true. OP if you're anywhere near Bath PM, I'm getting the hump with being horseless. And I can afford the monthly running costs!
 
ah alas, i'm in lancs...had lots of interest and even sent him out on loan this week...but to a complete loon so i had to rescue him back...all i'm getting is pushy mothers and teenagers and complete idiots. argh. :mad:
 
well girl came to try him, loved him, rode him nicely etc, seemed nice- said she worked with horses etc. went to visit livery yard was very nice so was happy to let her have him...took him tuesday afternoon about 4pm...wednesday morning 8.30am i had 8 missed calls on my phone- totally panicked me- she wanted to move yards coz she'd fallen out with everyone (yes in less than 24 hours!! :eek: ) wasn't too happy, then had a few more wierd phone calls- "he's really mental to turn out, what should i do" (he's not, can be a bit bouncey but not mental, my non horsey friend turns him out no probs)- made me start thinking "does she really work with horses"? so after a few more strange incidents i decided i wasn't comfortable (things she'd told me didn't add up...one thing i hate is liars) and went to pick him up...once i spoke the the people on the yard i realised what a nutter she really was- they said she has a rep for not paying her bills on yards in the area and app. on one yard she caused loads of trouble and then the next day tried to blame it on her evil twin sister (who she had made up!!!) so i grabbed horse and tack and legged it!! :eek: i think she couldn't really afford him and had kicked off at the yard when they asked for money up front...:confused:
so now am going to do full CRB checks before i let anyone else have him :rolleyes:
 
I can understand people loaning that can afford the keep but not the initial outlay of buying, but not loaning when you know you can't afford the keep anyway!

I loan horses as I am at uni and cannot buy due to the uncertainty of where I will end up and what I will end up doing, until I am more settled. I can afford the keep with 2 part time jobs whilst at uni and the summer etc (I normally seem to get short term loans).
And though I offered to pay for EVERYTHING...

First owner paid for travel, insurance, asked me to send her the bills for farrier and dentist. All I paid for was my livery!!!!! Despite me protesting then giving up and letting her pay if she wanted.

Next 2 owners paid for the travel to me and the insurance.

This is not because people think I might not pay bills, insurance etc. Everyone who has loaned to me knows that I am an incredibly trustworthy person. But I think they still want to feel linked to their horse while it is on loan etc, or feel like they still have some control?
BUT this has only been with people I knew as I looked after their horses on livery and they trusted me and knew my abilities etc. They wanted to pay and would not take no as an answer from me, they knew I was a student and just appreciated all the help I was giving them. I would not expect a stranger to pay for the keep!!! Or anyone else really, I think I was just a bit lucky at the time, although paying for them myself is something I enjoy and treating them like my own :)

I'm going to loan as my young mare is going off on loan as a broodmare. Can't do without horse, but don't feel emotionally nor financially "there" yet to buy another one. My injured mare used up all the cash - for one, she cost a lot in the first place and two, the vet fees (though she does have insurance)!!! Plus, the last two years of owning her was a totally emotional rollercoaster ride due to her injury. So even my emotional reserve has been depleted.

I am starting to save up again to buy a horse, and should be at that point in a year or two, but for now, I just want a horse that knows its job, and one that I can have fun on. So I am looking into loaning. I don't think that's too bad...
 
its not people like you i'm whinging about tasel...its people who can't afford the weekly outlay on a horse..have had so many people ring and say that they can afford a horse but not to pay for its shoes or similar- well to me no they can't afford a horse then!! :confused:

She must have been a few eggs short of an ommelette to even think this would get her out of trouble.

I'm not sure about the whole idea og loaning. Its great in theory but you hear so many horror stories that I think I would only loan from or lend to some one I knew well. One girl in our yard has to loan as she cannot afford the upfront costs of a competition pony and there are a lot of people about that cannot part with an animal their children have had for years. But one woman wanted her to be on the yard at 5.30 pm every night so she could say good night to the animal over the phone! Apparently she sees her at the same time every night but how on earth would the animal know it was her on the mobile?! The demands some people make amaze me.

lol, that made me laugh! I had a loan horse for 2 years, did everything with him that was agreed, had a bhs template contract, had farrier out regularly, dentist, all jabs up to date, he had a bit of arthritus so hacked him out lightly and really bonded with him.
One Saturday last year the owner rang me and said she was picking him up the next day as she was now financially secure enough to have him back. :eek::mad::mad:
Both myself and my family were devastated. It was awful. Never, ever again!

This is what would put me off. I have an eight and a five year old and if the horse was taken away from us they would be heartbroken. It can work though. A girl at our yard has a lovely cob mare that the owner has basically given to her on permanent loan. Her daughter emigrated and she gave up riding after a bad car accident where she had to have pins in her spine. But I suppose that's more like giving a horse away. I think people see loaning as an easy option but its as much of a minefield as buying.
