Just wondering if anyone knows of anywhere I could loan/rent a hackamore for a week to 10 days? or buy a second hand one cheap?

Had the dentist out yesterday and she has two small pieces of teeth on each side of her mouth that need to be removed as they have moved since he last saw her. He said to ride in a hackamore for about a week to let her mouth heal. She hasn't had them removed yet....was going to be today but the snow has stopped us!

Depends what you mean by a hackamore. :) It's worth trying a bit bank to see if you can trial one and some of the bitless bridle makers offer money back options. It really depends what kind you want though - like bits, not all options suit all horses.

Is it to just ride at home in or will you primarily be hacking?u

Depending on the weather really! Just for in the school and a few plods around the lanes once we defrost here, depending on how she goes with one maybe some pole or jumping work but if she doesn't like it I will go back to lunging & walking out in hand.

I was looking for a English hackamore...sorry should have put that to begin with! I have looked at some bit banks but the price outways the hassel! I could try a local tack shop's second hand section.

Thanks :)

I've got one for sale (full size). I also wanted to try one on my horse so I bought a 2nd hand one off ebay, unfortunately horse didn't like it much so I was going to put it back on Ebay. PM me if interested.

I asked about where you're going to use it because it's my understanding you can't ride on the roads etc in a head collar. But to try at home, why not?

On a related note, does your horse go in a snaffle at home? I presume by and English hackamore you mean one with shanks? (This is not necessarily the term in other countries.) I'm curious why the first choice would be a leverage bridle when the horse doesn't go in one now. Just being nosey, sorry. I've wondered this on a couple of threads and never remembered to ask!

Thanks for the replies :)

Tarrsteps: I usually ride her in a trans angled lozenge snaffle but also in a universal NS when required! It will prob be mostly for hacking and depending if she goes ok with it, maybe some jumping. She can get quite strong at times or be a end of buckle type ride just depending on her mood! :) Just because of the snow/ice at our yard she's been stuck in and don't really want to hop back on her in just a headcollar as I very much doubt she will listen to me in one :) although I will lunge her for a while first. My EDT reccommended using a hackamore on her for a week after she has them out.
