Loaning & what comes with the horse

In general I would expect at least a saddle, and usually bridle and rugs too.

I did however take on my current horse with absolutely nothing.

Depends really, I sent one of mine with just his headcollar. Another is going with some rugs and both of his saddles.

This is something that will need discussing between all parties and if any equipment is going with the horse needs documenting in the loan contract.

If I was loaning I would view it as a bonus if any equipment came but would not expect it.

If I was loaning I'd expect tack at the very least - that way you have the saddle and bridle the horse is used to.. I loaned my old horse out with the full works - at least then I knew he had everything he needed...! But it's generally agreed between the relevent parties.

Bails went with the kitchen sink! We joked he actually had more stuff than me when I moved out to uni. He went on loan for a year and when he was returned everything came back immaculately clean, his bridles looked newer than when he left and the girl who had him even replaced his brushing boots because they'd worn out a bit he also had a brand new numnah because the other one 'got scruffy' I was amazed but I guess I was really really lucky.

I would expect at least tack, pref tack with rugs, why should you have to go out and buy a saddle for a horse you may not have for a lng time, and also, if i was the owner i would want the horse to go with he saddle that fitted it.

We got Beau on loan with view to buy so it was a bit different, but he came with all tack and rugs, they were all listed in the loan agreement, and when we bought him they were included in the price.

I wouldn't expect anything, I have loaned ponies out without tack because I need the tack at home, and I have had stuff come back from loans ruined, to note a brand new weathabeata I sent with a pony that came back in bits

When we have had loans we have bought new rugs, and tack, often if they wern't too expensive have sent bridles/rugs back with loan, after all they were kind enough to loan them out to us

I think it can vary between nothing and everything! I sent my horse with practically everything including a few months supply of the supplements I had him on. The horse I have on loan came with tack, rugs and fly mask. On both loan agreements the main expensive items (tack, rugs etc) are listed on the loan agreement.

SeaSlug if you were buying a horse you would have to buy tack for it. Owners often take a risk in lending a horse, why should that risk be compounded by sending expensive tack also?

You can argue that if you trust the person to have the horse then you should trust them with the tack but it doesnt always follow.

But if i was going to let them take my horse, which is surely worth more than any tack, then i would trust them with my saddle! If anyone has any doubts like that then why let the person take the horse at all.

A ruined/injured horse can cost more than any saddle, and if i had any doubts about how something as simple as tack would be looked after, they wouldnt be getting near my horse at all.

My old girl is out on loan and I sent her off with a wardrobe for all seasons and a full set of tack, at least i know the tack she is wearing fits her well..

I agree with SeaSlug, if you are trusting the person with your horse then why not trust them with your tack.!?

My horse went with just his saddle-could have gone with more but his loaner had all the rest anyway and just wanted to ensure he had a saddle that fitted!

Its not always easy to send a horse off with tack. Like Gypsy shares a saddle with Mae, so if i sent her saddle with her then i wouldnt have a saddle for Mae!

I've lent everything with my horse. His saddle was specially adapted for his kissing spines which was what halted his competitive life and made him suitable for hacking only. It broke my heart to have to put him out on loan but it helped to send him with all of his rugs etc, because I at least know that he is warm and dry. the contract lists everything and asks that it is cleaned regularly etc, and states that any repairs must be made before it is returned or damaged items replaced. Now about to get new horse and have to go shopping for the whole lot all over again! However, the plan was always to get something a bit smaller (loaned horse was 16.3!) and I figured if all of my large rugs etc had gone I wouldn't be tempted with something the same size!
