are people still loaning horses?? or with all the bad press and horror stories has it put people off loaning there precious horses out??

feels like ive been looking for ages without success!

People are still loaning horses but most I know will only loan from word of mouth/someone with references that they know etc which can be a pain! What are you looking for? Good luck in your search!

Well i was one on the ones who posted about having our horse come home from loan in a right state....infact its the second time its happened. I did think we wouldnt loan again BUT our boy went to a girl yesterday on loan, ive known her for about 4 years, she lives just up the road from us & has loved our boy since we bought him, shes said to go & see him whenever we want (which we will) & ive told her to make sure she lets me know straight away if she has any problems, the other horse who came home from loan with him we have now found a girl to ride him from our place. So dont be to disheartened, they are out there & i do realise there are good loaners as well as bad, sadly its the horror stories that stick in your mind.

I loaned my youngster out at the beginning of the month.
He went to the first people to view him but i had at least 30 enquiries, so i really could pick and choose who came to view him by how they answered the advert or by email conversations.

There are still people loaning so dont give up!

thanks for the replies- glad to hear that there are still loans being arranged! i guess im looking for what the majority of people are- i would love to find just a happy hacker- something just to amble around the local country side, willing to consider an oldie, have stabling and grazing on small private yard- am an experienced owner- unfortunatly i spent my horsey budget to buy my daughter a safe first pony, giving up the option to buy my own horse!

will keep looking !! lol

I have tried to put my pony out on Loan. A very well bred pony that rides and drives. Would be perfect for either a more experianced lean rein rider/experianced child or a small adult. I have no takers. I have had a couple of enquires but most want to loan with view to buy. Where are all the people that want to loan.

We advertised our pony on the pony club website, and actually went on loan to a girl taught by one of my pony club teachers, who found him for her! They've been brilliant so don't give up. Ask around in the riding clubs maybe? :)

I agree that it is really slow at the moment - I've been looking for some time, and am starting to think I will never find what I am looking for. :(

My mare has just been retired to light hacking, so I want something that hacks nicely and is suitable for all RC activities.

What surprises me is a lot of horses offered for "full loan" need to stay at their current yard - I had always understood that a full loan meant the horse could be moved to the loaner's yard.

I started looking for a loan and found nothing sutiable. In the end I looked at one horse and got him home with me the next week. But there are peole out there loaning, I got an email the other week from someone who saw my wanted ad which I posted 6 months ago. Its a blooming shame though because the horse she has was exactly what I wanted!

I'm sure that this is because of the awful cases (eg Tim the arab) where the loaner sold the horse that they had on loan.

I can understand that, but it's a shame really, because for every bad loaner out there, there are probably many good ones. I always offer references from farrier, vet, equine physio, instructor etc, as it is a risk loaning out a horse to a complete stranger. I've had my own horse out on loan before as a retirement companion and didn't have a very good experience, but I hope there are owners out there still who are willing to loan to genuine people.

I've had mine up for share/full loan. Then I considered all the gone wrong stories I've read on here and i've bottled it so he's now just up for share! I would let him move yards though - I had no idea how far i would have let him go (I'm in Leeds so a couple of hours drive maximum I guess) and would expect planned and impromtu visits - just in case!! You can't expect to find somewhere on your doorstep and have him to stay on current yard.

Yep there are still the people out there loaning, my boy has been quite happily out on loan to someone for just over a year now and unless there is a drastic change in circumstances will remain so for at least another year (a few false starts with him being loaned to an equine college who then turned round and said they didn't want him just after new term started despite him having been with them a few months before summer hols to avoid precisely that situation, on reflection think we had lucky escape there and then he was loaned to a student who turned out to have too many time commitments... nothing like 3rd time lucky eh?). I did not know the person loaning him in any way, they just replied to an ad I put on horsemart, I was happy for him to move to wherever loaner was as long as they were the one paying transport costs if long distance. Person who has him is very genuine, always lets me know if anything's up or if they have the vet out (in fact shortly after she took him on he was doing some very odd things with one of his legs and she never once suggested that she might want him taking back off her hands or implied that I'd tried to pull one over on her, was just very calm about it all, kept me very up to date with what was going on as I was other side of country on a theory block at uni initially) has no problem with me dropping by to say "hi", even if she's not going to be around and has even let me have the odd ride. I trust her to always do right by my horse and I know she treats him easily as well as she does her own and spoils him rotten :) In return I try not to give in to my inner control-freak and try not to be too much of a nuisance. So yes there are people out there still loaning their horses out to strangers and letting said horse move yards and loans can still work very well. I will however admit that my horse probably struggles to tick any of the boxes given by Samantha! (only kidding he's a sweetheart really but he is also 16, slightly arthritic in his hocks and has a penchant for charging off up fields and doing exaggerated spooks at things he's seen a thousand times!)
