Anyone that loans out their horse could you advise me please?
Whats the usual deal with loaning out if the horse was to need vets attention is it my responsibility to cover the vet bills?
My current loan horse has just been sold and I paid a deposit that would be used toward a vet bill if needed however it never was so I’ve never dealt with the above situation of a vet bill while out on loan with me

thank you ?

It depends on what is agreed by you and the owners of the horse.

Usually, it is best to keep insurance in the owners' name, and sometimes it will be agreed that you pay the premium and/or excess. Sometimes, the owner will cover these costs. Sometimes it is agreed you will cover up to a certain amount and it's up to you to find a way to cover this, e.g. by taking out your own insurance.

I would discuss the situation with any prospective owners, as otherwise things can get very messy!

Ah yeah all of that would make sense! With my current it wasn’t my responsibility and I didn’t have to pay towards as my deposit would be used but I know some owners may do things differently wasn’t sure if there was a sort of usual/general agreement that most use! Will be sure to ask ?

I would leave it down to the owners, basically but insist something was decided in advance.

Personally, I would be uncomfortable with it being solely my responsibility unless the horse was loaned from a charity, as the owner may want input into vet treatment and there is only a certain amount I would be willing to spend on someone else's horse. I would also make the owner aware that if insurance is in your name, it may cause issues for them if you have to return the horse to them in the middle of treatment for an issue.

Some people will say that it should be the loanee's responsibility, but in my opinion this can go very wrong for owners.

Yeah ideally I wouldn’t really want it to be my responsibility as there’s also the possibility of horse being sold after a treatment and I’d have no say which I know happens unfortunately! Will definitely be something to make sure to mention thank you
