Local hunt fun ride with jumps

Sorry if this is a really daft question - and I am sure it varies - but when hunts organise their fun rides with (optional) jumps what sort of jumps/heights are they usually?

Are they normal obstacles you would cross out hunting eh walls etc or are they likely to put out some XC style jumps? Also do they tend to be modest sized given it is a fun ride or are there usually height options?

Sorry I know this will vary but I am waiting on the hunt secretary getting back to me so thought I would ask on here in the meantimes. I have done some fun rides before but never with jumps included. I would like to take part and do as many of the jumps as I can (I can jump confidently but no huge heights!!!) so just looking for others experiences really. It is the Lauderdale hunt that is organising it....

Ours range from 6" to about 3'. A lot are just logs on the floor - and fairly small ones at that with a few 'proper' XC fences thrown in, but it depends on the hunt and the venue - some have better fences than others. There are usually 2 height options per obstacle.

Thank you for that!

I was at one yesterday, nothing more than a couple of feet, most up o 18”. (I didn’t jump any). All easy to bypass. It would be very unusual on a Fun Ride not to be able to avoid jumps.

It's been a few years since I did my local one as it usually clashes with my being on holiday and he wont box so it's the only available to me but there were a lot of these sorts of things, there has in the past also been roll tops/ tiger trap type things/ xc type jumps. All were completely optional, I now dont jump so would be going round if I were to do it again!

And yes that is rain blurring the image!!!

Thanks 😊 typically my face looks awful but when I saw it was very impressed by the knees, I never took him hunting bit of a regret but he's so spooky with new jumps I had visions of him slamming the breaks on, me going flying and him being even more of a knob to catch than he is normally in all those huge open fields!

All our local fun rides (inc the drag hunt and another trail hunt) that have jumps ensure they are all dodge able, most (like others mentioned above) are between 50cm to a metre.

However a hunt ride is different, as riders go in a group, jumps can usually be got round, but best to ask secretary as sometimes big hedges are involved too.

Our hunt rides usually have hunt hurdles dotted about they are around 2.6 /2.9 height but completely avoidable for non jumpers

Just a thought. Is there normally a photographer at the ride? If you can find out who it is and look at their website for photos of previous years, that should give you an idea of what to expect. Try googling the name of the ride and photos?

Annagain's idea is a good one. You could also look at the hunts Facebook page. They might have photos up of last year's fun ride.

Many hunts have thier fun rides at a degree seperate from the hunt itself. We run 3 during the summer but all run under the banner of the charity that funds go toward. No funds go to the hunt itself - the rides, which cross established hunt country and have jumps maintained by the hunt, jump judges provided by the hunt etc. - are done for the benefit of the community. All jumps are optional. Heights vary from 3' to 18" - and our hunt country is lucky enough to cross two large XC venues who donate their land free of charge for our rides. We always have professional photographers (also donating their time and profits). Each ride has its own website - but we are a hunt close to London. Our facebook page is closed.

I did a fun ride yesterday. All sizes and types of fences from about 1' up to standard hunt rails in fence lines but with an open gate nearby.
I've also been on fun rides with only a handful of jumps in one field, the rest of the ride was jump less but scenic!
There is a fun ride round here virtually every weekend from April - October and you tend to see the same groups of people at each one, most of whom don't jump at all.

Thanks so much for all your helpful replies! The hunt secretary called me back last night but to be honest she didn't seem too sure herself but estimated at around 1' to 1m. I haven't jumped 1m in a very long time let alone a natural fence in an open setting eek but have been getting regular jumping lessons since the end of last year with a view to getting out on a beginners meet in the Autumn (I used to do XC etc when I was younger, fitter and fearless and have been specifically working on this area). I would like to jump everything but am obviously not going to do anything stupid! I have regular lessons in until then (aware this is different to an open field setting) and am going to go with the view of jumping as much as I can but not overface myself!

Good idea about looking for pics of previous years. I will try you tube too and see if there are any videos.....Often find people who have done these things with a hatcam on!
