Hi, Im going to be showing my ID at local shows this year in the Ridden hunter classes and wondering i i can see yours ???
Need ideas on correct turn out ect
Thank you very much
Katie and Dublin

Good luck to you both.

Regardless of the level, always try to be correctly turned out and ensure your horse gives a good balanced ride to the judge. The turnout for you and the horse should be the same as the attached picture. If you are lady riders use a normal riding hat, tails stitched up, no earrings and hair firmly tucked into an industrial sized hairnet - no wispy bits !!, extra firm bra - no bouncy bits !!

Make sure your horse stands up properly and trots at your side in a civil manner.

Most of all enjoy it and you never know where you are heading, my lad went from local pony show to HOY's.

Havn't got many really nice ones ! Thought this one would help with the turnout and quicker than writing it all out. !

Thank you Adorable Alice!!! Picture is great my mare already has a Pelham and mostly the correct tack and i did a little last year i just really wanted to see what other people were doing and the success so thank you very much that is perfect !!!

Pull her tail if you can, looks so much nicer than plaited (which is not correct for a hunter anyway) and look at the shape of her neck, if she lacks a little top line, get your plaits up on top to give the illusion of a crest.

Practise quarter marks/flashes, disguise any marks on her legs, waterproof mascara and felt tip pens do the job well, avoid boot polish -runs in the rain.

Another tip a pro gave me was to stand away from the head when you stand her up for the judge. Teach her to stand and pose with her neck up and head slightly stretched forward, with you out of the way. It is so easy to think, 'great she is stood square and to keep her there I will let her have her head in my chest'.

When you are in the line up, try not to let her doze off, you never know when the judge is looking and if it's a close call the class can be lost without you realising it. No need to pester the life out of her, just try to avoid the sleepy moose look !

HAHAH your really helpful Adorablealice!!
yes tail is pulled and her main will be plaited.
As you seem noliable i currently only have a jumping saddle :( so i was looking into numnhas that could possible remove the ilusion of its shape and some people have suggestied i use a numnha that has fluff aound the border that way it may look more gp ? what would you suggest?

No and another no if you are to be totally correct .....but at local level there is no reason you cannot use a jumping saddle and after all, saddles are expensive and it's not realistic to buy another saddle unless you are competing at county level.

Personally I would not put a fluffly numnah underneath it, I would be looking at either nothing or a very thin piece of sheepskin (same colour as saddle), cut to fit the saddle with almost nothing showing (the picture doesn't show it, but there is brown sheepskin under that showing saddle). If your mare will allow it, make sure the forward cut saddle is pushed as far back as you can to show her shoulder off.

If you do well at local level, enjoy it and want to go on, you would then need to think about a straighter cut saddle.

Remember to have irons on your saddle that would allow a judge with big feet to ride safely. Judges will often have a set of leathers available but it's time consuming and embarrasing if you have to whip your leathers off in the ring.

THANK YOU !!!!!

Yours looks lovley and same build as myn when she was young. I used to wonder if myn would ever grow into her self as her ears and knees have always been the size they are now and she is 12 lol
this has turned into a good thread for us. :)

My other question was eventually going to be doesn it matter that even tho myn is a dark bay she looks black but i have had so many comments on how i should show her as she looks like a true hunter altho i only ever seem to see bays in the hunter classes and a few greys ????
