I'm taking my young horse to a show on the 'spur' in 2 weeks time. It's going to be his first ever outing, but he's so laid back he should be ok.

Anyway, equipment wise I only have a sabre cordoba bridle which can only fit one of their grackles or rounded padded cavessons (both of which I have), and a slim brown grackle bridle. Black jacket with velvet collar, white and cream jods.

I was going to try him round the 45cm class as he hasn't jumped much at all (we're going for experience really). However I was looking at the showing classes and though I'd give it a go.

The classes they have are; M&M in-hand and ridden, Any breed in hand, Tack & Turnout, Best riding, Best combination, Ridden hunter/riding horse/cob.

Now it's only a piddly local show, so is it worth trying it in my showjumping garb? I don't really want to spend £££'s on a new bridle, jacket etc so can I get away with what I have? Or get anything cheap to cheat?

Cookies for getting this far :)

Ok equipment wise, definatly a cavesson - grackles are a no no.

At a little local show they won't throw you out the ring for wearing sj outfit, but you may get marked down in turnout classes for it. There are little things you can do however. Wear the cream jods, not the white. Also if you can a collared shirt and tie would be better. Perhaps you could borrow from a male friend/oh, or if not the school range at asda isn't too expensive for picking up shirts. Charity shops can also be good for random patterned ties.

Class wise, M&M is for the mountain and moorland ponies only. Any breed is as it says, for any pure bred, tack and turnout will only involve walking and halting and is judged on your presentation so can be great for young horses. Best combination will be judged on your riding as well as the horses way of going, and the final mixed class is for any type of ridden horse. Be careful, however, as the last class may involve the judge riding your horse.

Hope that helps :)

Thanks!

If I can borrow one off a friend, should I get him going in a double bridle, and use that for the riding horse class?

I'll feel such a plonker in a shirt and tie, I've only ever worn stocks! Haha

If he's not used to the double I wouldn;t bother. You don;t say what bit you have but snaffle is best, if he's used to a pelham (or double) then they are good too.

As above really, cream jods, (NO GRACKLE OR STOCK!!) shirt and tie. Yes ideally tweed or navy jacket (depending on horse and class) but hey ho as you say its only a little local.

And have fun! :)

Definately wear a shirt and tie. Depending on your size, asda sell kids ones for £2.50 for 2! (They go up to age 16 which is about a size 12 - 14 I reckon). Wash it with a duster and it will come out a perfect show cream colour! :)

For the showing classes a cavesson noseband and no gaudy browband, on the basis you have an M&M. This will also do you for all the other classes too, and the big bonus is you won't need to plait!!! Tweed jacket would be best, but its a local show and if you are all clean, tidy and smart then the type of jacket you wear shouldn't let you down... It will depend how many pot hunters are there ;)

If you are going for experience, don't splash out, wear what you have and get experience. However, if you are going out with the intention to win, then yes you will need to do some work. That said if it is a true local show, then you will be fine in what you are wearing for the moment.

Personally, I would go out this time, as is, see what happens and if you get the bug, then review things.

If you can change the crackle for showing easily, then that is the only thing I would do.

Good luck and I hope you have great fun.

Thanks! I'm not going out to win, I just don't want to look ridiculous. As long as I'm not overly embarrassing myself then its fine :)

I'm not sure about M&M as my horse is TB x welshie, and he has a pulled mane. I'll get myself a cheap shirt, I have one with cotton collar but I suppose you have to wear those horrible cardboard stiff ones....

thanks guys :)
