Hi - baffled by too much choice! Looking for local stallion (mare is 12 first foal so i've been advised on fresh semen) looking for dressage - shortlist so far is Tyson, T.Moviestar & Surprise. Looking for the obvious plus trainable, not too explosive nature!
Thank you

Hi there, I can vouch for Meadow stud they did the ai on my mare there, first class, my mare was 13 and maiden and they got her pregnant first time! She's in foal to Movistar, a lovely stallion fab movement and trainable (despite being by jazz who is known to potentially throw hot heads!!)(and doing very well in the dressage ring), also a very soppy temperament! Expected arrival march/April. Have you seen movistar? Proset I don't think is there anymore but the vets I think do still collect from him, Proset is very nice but his offspring can have a tendenancy to be quite querky!!

You Could also consider a young stallion that is ridden by Martin Schleicher (ridder at meadow stud) called Webs Zigeunerknabe, I saw him as a 3 year old and he looked to have some potential in either dressage or sj. He came 3rd in the Nuumed International Young Dressage Horse 4 year old class at the Hartpury festival of dressage see link: http://www.hartpury.ac.uk/dressage/news/
Scroll down to a black/bay 3rd picture from the bottom of the page.

Or my friend has a 4 year old ferro/obelisk black 17hh very impressive stallion who I'm not sure if he'll be standing this year or next. If you want any info on either of the latter stallions PM me and I'll find their details.

Thank you everyone - re:proset i did think of him but have had 1st hand experience of quirky offspring - will check others out now!Re: not local - only reason i said that was because of her age and needed fresh semen.

12 is not considered particulary old for a first foal. I would agree I would avoid frozen on her being an older maiden, but fresh chilled can be sent to you from anywhere in the UK, and most of mainland Europe too.
So dont worry about needing a stallion very local to the mare, you can look at most of the UK too, and it will still get to you at the same time (next day).

Volatis is spot on with this. It does not -need- to be fresh semen for a 12 year old mare. Fresh & chilled success rates are pretty comparable, and there is no reason why chilled AI would cause any problems versus fresh AI... so it would be a shame to limit yourself unnecessarily

too many to list!!!!! If you are prepared to pay shipping and health papers then you could look into european stallions. best sites for those would be places like elite dressage stallions, horse party, world class stallions etc etc. Otherwise most uk stallions are also available ai. I looked into loads last year but I prefered to be able to get out and see the stallion as quite often I'd see them in photo and then not be impressed on video etc, thankfully for me the most impressive for myself that I saw was only 1/2 hr down the road!!

Best thing will be to get yourself to the pHSP stallio parades in February. Your nearest will be at Hartbury college.

Of UK based stallions I love Showmaker, wonderful temperament and has been incredibly successful both here and in Germany in young horse classes and scoring very highly at elementary and medium. I had a lovely colt by him this year who is a sweetheart. Very nice pedigree being a son of Bundeschampion and GP horse Show Star, who himself is by Sandro Hit out of a Fidermark mare.

I also like Garuda K a lot, a Trakehner stallion standing at Woodcroft stud. He is by Grand Prix stallion Munchausen and almost at PSG now. Had a very nice collection of offspring at the Futurity, and lovely owners. http://www.woodcrofttrakehners.co.uk/garudak.php

Another UK stallion I really rate is Tycoon - even though he has stood in the uK in recent years, in the 2008 Trakehner stallion breeding indices he was consistently top 20, and especially improves the canter. http://217.154.64.185/stallions/tycoon.htm
Unfortunatly for us, the Germans have got him back and although British owned he will be back in Germany for 2009.
