So my JRT has been having slight walking problems and we thought she had strained her back when running for a tennis ball !!

Took her to vets had an X-Ray etc etc they cant find anything wrong

Then yesterday i picked her up to put her in my dads truck and her back leg sort of jammed and she couldnt stretch it down then it happened again over dinner that night !!

Now i know im talking in horsey language but its like a locking stifle??? does anyone know if dogs can get these ??? x

In a dog it's known as a luxating patella and it's common in terriers, you often see them on 3 legs doing the terrier hop.

My Yorkie used to have it, he would yelp and stop suddenly when it happened but I would give his leg a massage and he would then be OK again. Dogs can have an operation to deepen the groove the ligament is supposed to sit in, but it's not always successful.

My Yorkie hasn't had an incident for 2 years now and I think it's due to him muscling up and getting much fitter which helps keep his joints in place if that makes sense. He's not on any supplements. Dogs with this condition though can develop arthritis so you might want to put your dog on Cortaflex or something similar if it continues.

The vet should be able to manipulate the patella, it slips out of the slot very easily in a dog with this condition and it should be an easy diagnosis to make - ask them to check next time.
