Back story so as not to drip feed. I have a mongrel cob, age unknown but assumed to be between 18m and 2 and a half. I was a total idiot and bought a cheap youngster as I felt sorry for him (and needed a companion) and the owner has since been prosecuted on 49 charges of animal cruelty. He had a bad start with a terrible worm burden - bad enough that the youngster my friend bought at the same time died from gut issues. When he came he hasn't been trimmed ever and from the length of his hooves and tail we put him at about 18m. He has been remedially trimmed for the past year as he had 'slipper' shaped hooves. They are much better but still slightly pointed at the back.
Today he was stabled overnight as the farrier was coming out and it seems he has now developed locking stifles.
The farrier cancelled on me and is coming out on Saturday and will trim him again with the aim of getting a more rounded toe. The vet is coming to geld another one of mine in a couple of weeks so will get him to give him the once over then. I'm not particularly worried as they usually do grow out of it and he is out 24/7 usually anyway so it shouldn't be an issue for him.
So the question is - does anyone know how many do/don't grow out of it?
