Lol, My NON horsey O/H caught the uncatchable pony

He's a little smug about it but it made me laugh! After watching me try for ages then give up then watching my daughter try for ages and give up he told us "its ok i will get him"
We both sniggered slightly but left him too it.

We were both stunned when a while later he turns up with said pony calmly walking along side :-@

He tells us the way to catch a difficult pony is to explain to them your not there to catch it anyway and sit down, First though he planted a trail of carrots on the floor leading to him. Apparently the pony was so engrosed at finding the next carrot by the time he reached the catcher he'd forgotten all about being hard to catch and rummaged round his pockets looking for the next one!
Hey presto....pony caught!

Sometimes it takes a non horsey person to think of the solution! (he then reminded me how non horsey he is by walking up to my Tb who was quietly grazing from behind and giving him a great big pat on the arse to say hello! Lucky he didnt say hello back with a hoof!)

That reminds me of a story a friend has, she went to collect a pony. The not very horsey owner laid a trail of whole apples to the trailer from the paddock, by the time the pony had eaten his way to the trailer he was stuffed to the gills and wasn't interested in food anymore.

My friend just stood there with her mouth open in amazement - lost for words, which is a one off for her!
 
That's really made me smile :)

Isn't it SO frustrating! My non-horsey OH does the occasional thing after I've given him the 'be careful doing that thing' speech, and then gives me the 'I don't understand what all the fuss is about, this horsing lark is simple' face.
 
Once when I couldn't get near a youngster to put a headcollar on, husband said he would do it.
I had tried everything, food, small paddock, blah blah blah the lot!

10mins later I get a phone call from across the yard 'horse in stable, headcollar on.'

I asked him how he had done it - 'oh, I just put him through the crush.'

He put my lovely horse through the actual cattle crush!!

Got the job done though! :D

Lol, sometimes he makes steam come out of my ears!

On the plus side though, he does love grooming, which makes him VERY useful before a show. I might have to mention to him how difficult plaiting is... :)
 
OH is now quite horsey although still green :D

The horses and in particular Bailey cottoned onto this quite quickly, so whenever any of them got told off, they would go and stand behind OH and nuzzle his neck whilst looking at me as if to say, "Let's see if dad tells me off!" and then I would tell HIM off for not enforcing what I was doing and they would then move towards me and look at him with a look which said, "Uh oh,, YOU got told off!"

He is brilliant for grooming though, and at 6'4 hes the right height for Bailey to groom back without doing some damage!
 
There was a crisis recently at our yard, but everyone pulled together to sort out the YO's horses, the problem being that one man-hating awkward B***** had to be brought in and a pony put out. While we were all pondering what to do, OH went to the field, called said horse who came running (rather fast!) whereupon OH clipped the lead rope on, negotiated an awkward gate and brought it in, to see everyone standing open-mouthed!

OH is a total novice and knew nothing of the horse's dislike. Does now!:D
 
McNally, please send your OH to me. I am (for my sins) horse-sitting for a friend. She has a small and very wary pony who will not be caught. Despite the fact that he is only in a small pen he can be very elusive and I do need to catch him so I can move his little pen around the paddock for fresh grass.

I spent yesterday evening sitting on the grass with him three feet behind me wondering what I was doing. Looks like I shall be doing the same this evening (but possibly in the rain).

Of course, No problem I will be hiring him out by the hour for other "whispering" duties. He now assumes he can handle anything ;-)
 
Ha bless him :D now it him you need to get to catch the monkey before going to pc (hope you got that sorted by the way).

Nice thinking but I am reliably informed that plaiting is for girls. DH would probably hog ours before he tried to plait!
 
That's so funny. My non-horsey mum used to be able to catch my naughty pony by turning up in a skirt. The little s*d had worked out that we didn't ride in skirts and therefore it was safe to come close for food, so she used it to her advantage. Too smart for his own good!
 
hahahaha, i admit with my old loan pony i may have once sat down in the middle of the field with a packet of prawn and cocktail crisps to entice pony over:oworked though! only once...think she was too smart for her own good;):rolleyes:
 
Brilliant! My OH has no interest in horses...the only time he showed an interest was when he knew it took me 20mins to catch my mare! she was on 70 acres (I got pretty fit!) He used to stand by the gate in hysterics! he says to this day he wished he had filmed it ....she got in the river once to get away! I had to roll up jodhs and climb in!

He still laughs about it 10 years on!
