As the title says really...

What would you go for and why??

Fwiw, Ariat Bromonts don't fit so am wondering whether gaiters would be better or whether it is just a case of trying lots of different makes and styles until I find some that fit?

ETA: These would be for "smart" wear (not sure my v. old lovson joddy boots and skanky MH chaps are all that appropriate for competitions....)

Personally i prefer the look of nice long boots at comps but at home short boots and gaiters all the way ( i think because they cost me less i dont mind them getting scuffed up for everyday use)

I wear short boots and gaiters. It's easier to mix and match the boots/gaiters to get a better fit for both your foot and your leg as with long boots you don't have as much opportunity to do this and it's very expensive going down the made to measure route!

They must look ok though, as recently a (non-horsey!) pal came to watch me compete and when I was taking my gaiters off after XC said he didn't realise they were "fake" long boots and I was a cheater!

Oooh, I love the MH SC3S boots! I've been wearing them about 3 years now and have found they really help with lower leg stability and security, esp when jumping. Am terrified that one day they'll stop making them!

I wear the Stirling jod boot and get them from Equiwear . They don't have the supreme though I'm afraid, but have been the best price I've found for the jod boots and fast delivery.

I really struggled to find long boots to fit me, because I have long but very skinny legs

So I got some cheap lace up jodhpur boots off Equestrian Clearance, and a nice pair of English Gaiter Company gaiters for Christmas, they look really smart and worked out loads cheaper too!

I always competed in gaiters and short boots before I bought my Mark Todd long leather boots.

They are the only brand that fit me perfectly; and I tried nearly every brand, such as Mountain Horse, Brogini, Sergio Grasso etc. before I bought them.

I ride in them everyday as they're so comfortable. I've had them for over a year now and they still look like new after a quick polish

It depends on how long your legs are! I would LOVE some smart long boots but my legs are just too damn short and not big enough around so I can't find any that fit

and can't afford made to measure

so I'm one of these skanks in joddy boots and (children's) gaithers

I have come the the conclusion I have odd legs - they are 33" in total but most of that is thigh... I also have skinny ankles but am not a narrow fit...

Also like the MH Ascot joddy boots so maybe they are the way to go??

Daughter has odd shaped legs, have found it is worth a look on ebay at the long boots, its a risk, but with luck an careful measuring there are bargins to be had. Have had a pair of brand new Cavellos for £20, no p&p as they turned out to be local, and Ariat Field boots for £35, used but fantastic condition.

You need to go shopping

and see what your leg type fits - I prefer long boots for smart wear, but when i was looking for new pair, i went for what fitted me, luckly it was long boots, as i hate if my ankles look fat and with the gaiters and boots none looked right or even fitted. Best selection around here is the shop which is on the old airfield, sorry can't remember name

I would say I prefer long boots but my short boots + gaiters actually look smarter! Have got the Tredstep Pro gaiter and it's such good quality and a relly good fit. Also gaiters don't drop like boots do. And it's not as though I have cheap boots- £400 cavallos but the gaiters just look smarter imo! Because you don't have to get your foot round an instep they're a much better fit on the ankle, even compared with zipper long boots.

Guess it depends on budget, generally would say you can get a very smart boot/gaiter combo for a lot less than long boots. Cheaper long boots almost always look it

I doubt long boots would fit me, I have really large calves

I have ariat boots and sergio grasso gaiters, they look really smart and have lasted 3 years. I got the ariat boots with laces too which makes them look even smarter (and more like long boots!)

I prefer short boots and gaiters but only as I scuff the toes and wear out my boots so often I couldn't afford to keep replacing a pair of long boots!

I much prefer long boots for competing but wear short boots and chaps everyday. Despite having huge feet and short thin legs I've found a pair which fit me perfectly

You just have to shop around.
